I'm a longtime UTM Home user. Should I eventually upgrade to the new XG UTM and utilize the Sophos Endpoint products? I'm a bit confused as to the home applicability and cost of the Endpoint products in a home environment. I see the cost is on a "user basis". I wouldn't need user-specific controls in my home environment (4-person household)...would I be able to purchase one "user" license and use it on up to 9 devices (Windows/Android Mobile)? I currently run UTM9 at the Gateway and Norton Security on the devices. I'm just wondering if there would be a benefit for me to consolidate under Sophos for the "Security Heartbeat" capabilities. Would I also be able to monitor/control all those devices using the Cloud Console?

Ultimately...I guess was I'm asking is...does XG w/Sophos Cloud Endpoint make sense for a home user?

  • You cannot purchase one user license, minimum is three and you have to be a business user. Unless you have Active Directory (where a single user name is used to authenticate to multiple devices), every one of them will be counted in the license.

If you want to stay on the freeware side you can register free Sophos Home account which will allow you to monitor (but not control) all of your endpoint devices (up to 10). You can then replace Norton Security with Sophos Endpoint Cloud solution.

Regarding your UTM question, Security Heartbeat is not available for home users (XG and Sophos home license users).

My advice for your scenario would be to stay with UTM9 and migrate from Norton Security to Sophos Home free, for now.
