Uses for an Astaro SG 220

I have an Astaro SG 220 w/4GB of RAM, that is no longer in use. Licenses have long expired on it.  What can I do with it? Is there an Open Source FW that can be loaded on it and use all of the ports and hardware?

Thanks for any ideas!

  • Hi Steve,

Unfortunately there isn't an open source firewall that can be loaded that will use all of the hardware like the display etc. but you can technically load any firewall onto the unit that can work with an intel x86 architecture. You can install the software version of the UTM on it and use it as a home appliance and there is a user written guide somewhere as you have wipe all the partitions to do this (which you would have to do regardless for other software).

Here's a nice community post that details a lot of it: https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/f/52/t/27944

    Hope that helps!

    Emile

  • As stated, you might not be able to get the front display working although I do recall a pFsense firewall running with a front display plugin  on an old firebox some time ago

  • Steve, I haven't done this, but the accepted wisdom is to load the hardware appliance software, rename the /etc/asg file and then apply your home (software) license.

    Cheers - Bob
