STAS - what is it and what is it's purpose?

I've read the literature on STAS (Sophos Transparent Authentication Suite) but I am still wondering what is the advantages of it? 
 The UTM allows for AD authentication so what advantages does this suite give that the AD authentication that the UTM comes with doesn't?

With STAS you should be able to use User authentication object not only in Web Filtering, but also in every other UTM module like Firewall, QoS, Application Control...etc, which was not possible before.
