Astaro.org original forums now available in the Sophos UTM 9 group

Hi All,

In case you haven't already seen them, we have published the active forums from the Sophos User Bulletin Board (UBB/Astaro.org) and they are available directly in this current group.  I'd like to thank the UBB moderators for reviewing the migrated threads and providing feedback.  All inactive forums or ones we didn't need any more are in a sub-group called Astaro.org in homage to the Sophos User Bulletin Board.

Thank you all for your patience while we migrated the forums and sorry for the disruption over the past six weeks.  Please have a look at the forums and make use of them.  If you find an issue please feel free to post back and let me know.

  • twister5800 and vilic,

Noted.  To let you know what's happening: We are in the process of carrying out a usability review of the site.  The whole presentation will be reviewed as part of that.  The resulting design may be from a few tweaks in size and layout to a reskin or anywhere in between.  That review result won't reach me immediately and then we'll have to implement and release the changes - I'll keep you up to date.

Please feel free to screenshot things or list what doesn't work.  I know I've said this before but 'horrible', 'ugly', 'this isn't it', 'too big' isn't exact enough to plan requirements [:S].  I could hand our designers several screenshots like this...

...and they jump into the CSS and change a load of things, but I may be missing the point of 'too big'.  Always like to get (clear) feedback. [:)]

  • I like one long page. I think the new posts will have a better chance of getting categorized correctly if everything is on one page. Otherwise we will have everything in General forum like right now.

If the minor annoyances that are mentioned by vilic and martin are addressed, it will be almost perfect.

Thanks again for seeing this through this far. I was really starting to doubt sophos [;)]

  • Ruckus, let me demonstrate what "too big" means to me in this two screenshot examples:

Sophos Community - I can barely see a single post with those large fonts and lot of wasted space (like too wide margins and top header):

Astaro.org - same screen resolution but smaller font and narrow margins...much more usable space, much less scrolling:

One of community users (I think that was Bob himself) mentioned that he is reading this forum with browser set to 75% zoom out...;)

  • If possible: all active on 1 page, inactive forums as sub forum or similar.
  • The transferred astaro.org posts are formatted clumsily with a Justified format resulting in words being split randomly. Please change the style sheet to use Left-Aligned as is done with all the new posts.

    Cheers - Bob
  • Hello - thank you and all others for migrating the old astaro.org into the new forum. Should we use it to search old posts or to post in it? Because it seems that the sub-group is writeable.

    Greets
  • Is there a better thread for feature requests to the new Sophos Community?

    - - - - -

In case this is the right place, here are my requests:

    1. Please redirect members back to the web page they were looking at after they are forced to login to the Sophos Community. When I find a thread where I want to add a comment, I am forced to login first, then navigate through the community (again!) to find the page where I wanted to add a comment. Not fun.

    2. Please make the Sophos Community login cookies valid for a much longer period of time. What threat are you protecting against by forcing us to login so frequently? Once a month is fine; once a week would be acceptable. Every day? Please no.

There are lots of user interface improvements that are needed, and other members have already made good comments. I have three pet peeves:

    3. The huge loss of information density. The old forums showed a lot of posts on one screen. Now there is a lot of empty space and few posts per page. The original post is displayed on every page, which is not nice, either.

    4. Please remove automatic hyphenation. Just let the words wrap. Automatic hyphenation breaks commands and other text that users want to copy and paste.

    5. Navigating through very long threads used to be much easier. There was a list of page numbers at the bottom that helped a lot. Now we have page forward, page back, and goto end.

    Finally:

    6. Please restore the old astaro.org forums in read-only format. What brought me here this morning is an outside blog that included a link to the old forums with a solution to my problem. I can't find the referenced thread.

    Thank you.
  • Lots of good ideas here.

    1. Take a look at the thread at the top of General Discussion to see workarounds to this and other issues. Ctrl-click instead of a simple click.
    2. This would be reasonable if the cookie only applied to the Community. Unfortunately, it's an SSO for everything Sophos. I don't want our reseller account open on a laptop stolen from me. If it's possible to have separate cookies, then I agree.
    3. Agreed. It's especially frustrating when you select 'Use advanced formatting' and all but the post to which you're replying disappears from view.
    5. Also, it would be helpful if >> took you to the last post instead of to the top of the last page.
    6. This would be easy to do - just create a copy of the old astaro.org that's already here using the original astaro.org directory structure and point www.astaro.org here.

    Cheers - Bob
