I'm experiencing intermittent (apparently random) connection trouble.
My setup:
Sophos UTM Home 9.315-2
CPU: Intel Atom 230 1.6GHz
RAM: 2 x 2GB PC2-6400 Kingston DDR2 (dashboard reports 3GB ?)
Ethernet 1: Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5764M GbE (integrated) - LAN
Ethernet 2: Realtek RTL8168B GbE (PCI-E) - WAN
HDD: Western Digital Scorpio WD1600BJKT 160GB 7200RPM
DSL Modem: Westell 6100 ADSL2+
ADSL Provider: DSL Extreme (3000/768 Kbps) with dynamic IPv4 address; They're re-selling Verizon DSL service in my area.
The DSL Modem/Router is in bridge mode. The Sophos UTM WAN connection is configured as a PPPoE endpoint.
So the problem is that sometimes I lose access to the Internet. When this happens, I can't ping well-known public IP addresses (e.g. 8.8.8.8) from either a system on the LAN side of the UTM or from the UTM itself (Support > Tools > Ping Check). These attempts will result in request timed out responses. Rarely will it go more than a day until the problem resurfaces, but sometimes it can happen several times within a short period (say 20-60 minutes).
To temporarily resolve, I sign on WebAdmin and click the Reconnect button next to the WAN interface. It usually reconnects quickly and (almost?) always has acquired a different public IP address.
One evening as a troubleshooting step, I configured a Windows laptop with a "dial-up" PPPoE connection and connected it directly to the Westell modem (bypassing the UTM for testing purposes). I tested it this way for a while; not once did I experience similar problems.
I'm aware at least some of the hardware (CPU) is probably a bit (to be generous) on the low end for UTM. I'm hoping/planning to replace the hardware with something more substantial soon.
Any ideas/suggestions are welcome.
Thank you!
