I have two computers with Linux Mint 17, first my laptop was giving me a hard time when FireFox and Thunderbird wouldn't open. I'd click the icon, the processors would jump to 100% and then they'd time out after a minute. After running them in the terminal I got back an error message.
XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /usr/lib/firefox/libxul.so: /usr/lib/firefox/libxul.so: cannot open shared object file: Timer expired Couldn't load XPCOM.
And I was getting this on both of my linux computers.
I tried to re-install the apps, no change. I wiped out the folders, and re-intalled, no change. I had similar problems with Opera but Chrome and Chromeum would open but only after waiting for a minute (Installed several different browsers to experiment and troubleshoot). I can get onto the net, that's not a problem at all, that's how I was able to install multiple browsers. The browsers themselves wouldn't work.
I thought it was weird I get this on both of my computers, I tried to disable Sophos to see what happens. I opened the terminal and ran this"
sudo /opt/sophos-av/bin/savdctl disable
Then they worked fine. An update is needed ASAP or you're gonna have some very angry customers. I'm not uninstalling Sophos but I have to run the command every time I turn on the compute and would like to keep my AV operational.
