Upgrading from Home Edition

Since I have more than 50 IP address at home, I'm unable to use the Home Edition unless there's a valid work around that doesn't involve double-NAT'ing.

I have my own hardware, Supermicro 5018A-FTN4 (8c 2.4GHz, 8GB DDR3 ECC, and 128GB SSD) which should be more than enough to handle their business end of UTM.

However, I only see their hardware products. Do they make a software-only UTM? What would the cost be for a 1 year license? Any IP restrictions? Per user restrictions? etc...

    Yes, there is a software version.  Pricing is generally done on a per IP/User basis starting at around $90 US per IP (it gets cheaper per IP, the more licenses you get).  You'll need to contact a reseller for pricing specifics based on what you need.

    Yikes! I'm surprised no one has a better fee structure for home usage. With the amount of IP devices coming out each day, 50 IP's sure add up quick. It would be nice if they offered a 100 IP or /24 for Home "Professional" for even $200 a year.

    I just don't see the point for my garage door opener to need any UTM capability. I doubt it visits p0rn sites while I'm at work [:)]

    Have you considered a multiple firewall approach:

    • The lower/lowest end of the appliance line (multiyear term for better price/year), either with a license bundle or selectively licensed
    • Essential Firewall License(s)
    • Home License


    Staying within the Sophos UTM family allows you to leverage SUM and common interfaces.

    Networked does not have to mean internetworked and especially not publicly internetworked.

    I have contacted both Sophos (chat) and enterpriseav.com and both said they recommend the 75 user license which exceeds my "home" budget.

    All my devices need to speak to the Internet unfortunately, for notifications and/or upgrades/patches.

    The only devices that shouldn't be double-NAT'd are probably the PCs, tablets and smartphones.  Get an inexpensive wireless router and put a bunch of the other devices behind it or use an old PC with the Essential Firewall.  You will need to use port forwarding (or DNATs in the Essential Firewall) to reach devices that you query from "outside" the "Device LAN."  Could that work for you?
