New UTM User - Few questions

Hi all,

New UTM (Home) User here, first of all, wow what a platform, I'm coming from ClearOS, and wow, Sophos UTM is a breath of fresh air!

I have everything running well now and am starting to look at some more advanced tweaking. I'm hoping some of the advanced users can provide some advice as to what is possible/has been tried or doesn't outright work?

My questions are:

1) Is it possible to rewrite the webmin console to a standard webport while still using the VPN Portal? Currently I have the VPN Portal on 443 and webmin on the standard port of 4444, is it possible to have it on 443/webmin or different sub domain?

So you may have https://website.net:443 for the user portal and https://website.net:443/webmin (or https://webmin.website.net:443) for the admin portal?

I tried a few things with the virtual web servers, but it didn't seem to like it.

2) My WAN link at home is quite restricted so I'm usually pretty careful with my bandwidth monitoring, I would like to be able to have something like the interface live monitor on one of my dashboards I run on another machine, is there a way to make them available without logging in? Failing that, does that data present on any of the system logs that I could back out to a syslog server and tail it?

3) I'm in the process of trying to get LCD4Linux up and running as well, I'm almost there thanks to all the posts on this forum, however I'm having an issue with the LPT port, I'm fault finding at the moment, but I did notice some comments in the forum regarding the UTM trying to use the parport0 which may cause issues, can anyone confirm/deny?

Further to that, I have LCD4linux running, I'm getting a stack of 'busy flag timeouts' and nothing ever shows on the HD48770 LCD (although it does start the main loop without error), brownie points for anyone that can point me in the right direction for that one!!!

4) My last question for the moment is around some of the 3rd party apps running on the UTM. I use ifdata and iftop quite a lot, ifdata isn't installed and while iftop is installed, it seems to be a stripped down version as it is missing some of the switches I use a lot (in particular -t). Does anyone have any compiled versions of those apps or knows of a good guide to statically compile them? Will it be possible to run two separate versions of iftop given there is already a version installed?

    Nope, but you can change the port used at Management > WebAdmin Settings > Advanced, but read the note to the side to understand what will break if you make it 443.

    Not natively.  Try Logging & Reporting > Log Settings > Remote Syslog Server to send logs to a syslog server.

    Yes, just place them in different paths.

    Just so you know, Sophos specifically disallows backend customization.  Being a home user, this doesn't affect you directly.  It will greatly decrease your chances of getting assistance for such things, as paid business users won't do them because it invalidates their support agreements and warranty.  So, you won't find things like guides to compiling 3rd  party apps.  If you compile on a SUSE system yourself, it should work.

    thanks Scott, completely understand the 3rd party point of view, and really, I'm trying to keep it vanilla as possible. I'll have to live with the webmin port, not a big issue.

    I'll play with syslog, going to look at SNMP monitoring as well. If I can pull the stats from SNMP, that will allow me to run LCD4Linux on another box, completely independent of UTM, which would be my preference, keeping my 'add-ons' off the box itself.
