Initial UTM Home edition setup questions...

I've been trying to learn networking and firewalls, I've searched for most of my questions and have read some of the guides on here, so please try to forgive my noob-ness. 

I've installed UTM Home edition on a spare computer without a hitch that shouldn't have any issues handling it. My current setup is:

Cable modem (Surfboard 6121) > UTM > Wireless router (TP-Link WDR3600 stock firmware). I plan to use the wired ports and a wireless network in the same LAN. I have disabled DHCP on the wireless router and no cable is plugged in to the Internet port.

However, after configuring both interfaces on the UTM, I've been unable to get out to the Internet. I've had both interfaces show Up/Up, but no output on the WAN interface. I'm not sure if I've just setup the WAN interface incorrectly or maybe it's just the firewall doing its job until I setup rules. So my questions are:

1) Can I designate my own IPs for the WAN interface/gateway? Or does it need to be what my ISP has provided? 

2) Are there any default configurations that are the culprit? I know the masquerading internal > external rule is added.

A lot of text there, I apologize, just feel like I'm in over my head. Thank you in advance for any help!

    Sounds like there's a routing issue within your network. Make sure the WAN port of the UTM has your external IP and DNS - if it doesn't it's not going to do anything. It is assigned via your ISP. You can check the WAN adapter within the UTM administration page.  Depending on your ISP it may require a call to release your current IP and register the new MAC. If the UTM WAN interface has an IP and DNS information - then move on to DHCP on the internal adapter (LAN) on the UTM. You need to supply the proper internal addressing to the network segment via DHCP - I'd suggest you use DHCP from the UTM to make things easier. The wireless router - you'll need to shut down all services to include the routing function if you're not connecting the WAN port to the LAN port of the UTM. This way the wireless router acts as a switch/bridge rather than a router. Another way to chain the wireless router to the UTM is to use the WAN port of the wireless router connected to the LAN port of the UTM. This way you have two separate network segments that can be addressed independently. Hope this makes sense and helps kick start your efforts...

    Thanks for the reply, Chris.

    EDIT: I feel like a complete arse. It looks like the modem was just locking to previous MAC address. Once plugged into the WAN port on the UTM, I power cycled the modem and it picked it right up. Good to go.
