New User - Quick Questions

I just setup my first Sophos Home firewall.

My Hardware:
Dell OptiPlex 320
Pentium 4 3.2
two 2gig sticks of mem - 3.5 usable
Broadcom builtin NIC - 10/100 - used for external interface
Intel PCI NIC - 10/100/1000 - Used for internal interface

Will this hardware work well?

Also, I would like to add additional internal L3 interfaces for lab/testing purposes. Does Sophos Home support this?

L3?

You're not going to get very good IPS throughput with an old CPU, but it should work.

How fast is your internet connection?

L3 = Layer3 = Routed Interface

Internet = 105Mbit

Think that this CPU will be able to keep up with 105?

Probably not, but you can test it...

Disable the web Proxy (Web Protection).

Test at Speedtest.net with IPS ON and OFF.

You should get full speed with IPS off, and probably less with it on.
I would leave it on though, for better protection. If it's cripplingly slow, get a better CPU (such as a high-clocked Intel Haswell or Broadwell i3).

Note that HTTP is worst-case for the IPS; other protocols such as FTP and p2p apps will run much faster.

Recent UTM versions have lots of tuning options in the IPS settings; use Rule Aging, etc.
