I know this is a stupid question, but I'm trying to learn more about networking. I recently set up a computer running Sophos UTM Home Edition. It sits between my router and my cable modem and is configured to be my network's DHCP server. The setup is working great, but I'd like to understand what's happening a little more. So my question is, is this server essentially my router now? The cable modem is plugged into one of the two NIC's on the server and the second NIC is plugged into one of the regular ports on my wireless router (not the WLAN port), so it seems like my wireless router is now nothing more than a switch (connecting the devices within my network) and the Sophos UTM server is my router (connecting my network to the internet). Is this a correct assessment? Could I theoretically replace my wireless router with a wireless access point and everything would still function normally? Again, sorry for the stupid question.
