Astaro ASG220 cluster very slow, Update to UTM V9?

Hi all,

we have running a astaro 220 cluster in the version 8 in our company. We use web protection and mail filtering. Our problem is, that the Astaro is very slow with high RAM and CPU usage. We need to restart the ASG at least every 2 weeks. Now the question:
Is there hope, that an update to software version 9.x and the switch off of mail filtering make the Astaro faster? Or is it recommended to buy one or two new Sophos appliances? We have about 100 proxy and mail users.

    Hi, version 9 has had high RAM usage for many users, and it's minimum hardware recommendations are higher; I don't think it's likely to help.

    Talk to your reseller, but I'd get the new appliances with at least 6 or 8GB RAM.

    Jimbo, if you are using old 220 appliances (still have the Astaro label on them) your speed/performance issues will only get worse if you were to update to V9 (if it's even possible).

    Also... email filtering is probably the lowest-load-producing operation the UTM can perform, other than NAT/Firewall operations... turning that off will likely not help with load much.  Web Filtering and IPS (and VPN, if a large number of tunnels are configured) are the greater contributors to resource consumption on the UTM.

    The thing is, Version 8 is going End-Of-Life December 31st this year, so if you want to continue to use the Sophos/Astaro solution, you're going to need to upgrade your appliances.  I'd seriously consider going to the new SG series (if 220s used to cover your organization well before, I'd look at the SG210 Appliances).

    You should contact your reseller (if you have one) for pricing and upgrade information.
