UTM Feature Requests

UTM Feature Requests is how users are supposed to make requests for features and enhancements to UTM, but appears that Sophos does not keep the status of user requests up to date, resulting in there being many requests that seem to stagnate, despite in some cases there being hundreds or even thousands of votes. Also, there are numerous instances where the status refers to a feature being planned for a "future release" that is now in the past. It would be nice if Sophos would update the status and also provide more insight on the roadmap (planned features and release dates) so we have more visibility of where UTM is going. If Sophos does not intend to do anything with a feature request, the votes should be returned, or alternatively, users should receive new votes periodically. I think that would help the UTM Feature Requests to be more dynamic.

    There is definitely some need for us to better manage the feature site internally, than it is currently. 

    I have consistently gone through and moderate new ideas that are submitted, but mostly to respond to ideas that are already possible, or otherwise unnecessary, and to highlight internally, ideas that are very interesting. We do need to do a better job of communicating ideas that are currently under consideration, or even development. 

    Since the feature site was launched back in Astaro times, product management has grown from just one or two individuals who were responsible for all product areas and features, to a team of people. It now takes more people to go through and review the features that are under their area of responsibility, and update them as necessary. Some are more proactive about it than others, and so you see some types of requests receiving more regular updates than others. 

    I've recently taken over ownership of some responsibilities in the feature portal, and in the coming weeks, will be working out how to manage it to best serve both us and our customers. I expect this will translate to more frequent updates for feature requests in general, and at least a catch-up of some of the requests where the status is out-of-date.

    @Bob, When the feature portal was originally launched, Gert posted all of the ideas we had been tracking through other systems before then, which is why so many ideas were under his name.

    @AlanT, thanks for the response. I'm sure it takes a lot of effort to stay on top of the feature requests, as there are so many. UTM is a great product and it's very versatile, so it's not hard to see why there are so many requests to take it in more directions. It's not easy to tell from outside how much influence the feature requests have on the product direction. It seems that there are so many requests that they simply get lost in the list. Possibly, if features with a common theme or capability were combined, it might make the job more manageable. Also, you may or may not to open the pandora's box, but I'm sure it would be interesting for users and possibly beneficial to Sophos to provide more visibility of features and bug fixes that are under consideration for each new release. You might be surprised at the what you hear from users if you ask for comments for consideration to "prioritize" what features to develop for each new release.
