Possible Bug: Loginuser mails on external smtp host

Hi all,

i've noticed some issues/possible bug in Sophos Release 9.201-23:

Steps taken so far

  • external SMTP Server for admin notification set up
  • set email address for admin notifications

Issue I face
---> Loginuser@ sends admin notifications outgoing on the specified smtp Server.
But this (!) will create issues on our side due to spam on the catch-all Folder of our mailserver

following Admin notification entries:

2014:06:06-00:00:06 FLSC-Sophos postfix/smtp[21008]: 5E23A23F3B: to=, orig_to=, relay=1----8[1-----8]:25, delay=4.8, delays=0.27/0.01/4.5/0, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 Message accepted for delivery)

2014:06:06-00:00:06 FLSC-Sophos postfix/qmgr[23384]: 5E23A23F3B: removed

    DK, I appreciate that you want to hide detailed private info, but you're too good at it! [;)]

    I don't understand your problem.  Maybe you just need to NOT configure the smart host on the 'Advanced' tab.

    If something is being caught in a spam filter, we would need to know where that filter is and what the logfile shows when it sees notifications as spam.

    Yes, just disable the 'Advanced' tab.

    But with disabling Advanced tab I cannot select an SMTP Server/hub i want to send the mails to, right?

    So do i Need to Setup the smtp Proxy in Sophos UTM?

    I have had this problem before, and ended up setting up a SNAT rule to force outbound SMTP notification traffic from the UTM to use the interface I wanted it to.  This was despite the fact that the on-board routing table should have sent the traffic out of the correct interface, reported this eons ago, and forgot about it.  I guess it still happens sometimes.

    Well this is the only Mailserver that is allowed to do outgoing SMTP. The sophos here is not our only Firewall - and I want to have notification mails be routed/hopped over that mailserver

    So, you're saying that your organization's mail server is external?  If it's internal, then the issue is between the designated smart host and your mail server. If the smart host IS your mail server, then you just need to stop treating it like a smart host for itself.

    I think I now understood how to handle that - You are right I missunderstood external SMTP-Mailserver vs smarthost.
