Sophos made a big deal about their new hardware

Do the new SG series appliances offer IPMI:
Power Control?
Serial over LAN?
KVM over LAN?
USB virtual media?
more?

I doubt that they would have any IPMI features; that's not a typical list for an appliance... those capabilities are for multipurpose servers.   Typically you do not need any of those types of features for a security appliance.

I'm not really knocking the fact. However what advantage (say apart from warranty) does the Sophos device have over the OEM device? Are there any special features added that make it have more value?

Could I say purchase a number of OEM devices and resell the unit with UTM on it and my own branding and would I save a few $ / £ ?

Nope. and Nope. If you wanted your own branding, you'd have to commit to buy a large unit count, typically several thousand or tens of thousands of units before most OEMs will consider placing your branding on the box.

Sorry, but this is trolling, right? Buy as much OEM stuff as you want and try your best, make your own experience in this regards. But please report your findings back. And please be aware of any legal issues, too. [:)]

Here are the major differences:

1)  Appliance licenses have no IP limits -- so no license counting to maintain, or costs associated with the unlimited or high IP count Software (or Virtual) Licenses.
2)  Appliances are easier to support -- Sophos worries about the hardware; less issues with compatibility when a new kernel is introduced, etc.
3)  Appliances support in-place major version upgrades; handy for those remote sites that are far, far away.  To go from Version 8 to Version 9, for example, on the Appliance was a simple few clicks in the Webadmin GUI on a running system.  On a Software Appliance, a reinstall from ISO and restore of a backup is required (yes, many of us have asked for this to change, but I doubt it will).
4)  (MINOR) Appliances (all but the smallest ones) do include some front panel controls and status reporting.

That said, my business deploys a mix of software, virtual (both VMware and AWS EC2-based), and appliance solutions for our customers; in some cases (such as low IP count, but high bandwidth / processing requirements) an OEM appliance (provided and supported by my company) combined with a Sophos UTM Software License is a better deal for a customer than a hardware appliance... sometimes it's the other way around.  That's why we do ask a lot of questions when a sales prospect comes to us looking to buy or evaluate the product.

Forgot to respond to this one:

You CANNOT rebrand the UTM software, it's against the licensing agreement, and if you are a partner, against your partner agreement.  That would be a mistake (likely a costly one).

However, you can certainly provide your own hardware, install LICENSED Sophos UTM Software Licenses on it, and sell it to your customer.  You can't rebrand the software as yours, though.

PLUS if you do the self-appliance you only have the software license option which gets expensive in a real hurry once you go above 50 ip addies....
