So, i want to change my setup, but want to make sure im not going to break by setup and spend hours trying to get it working again.

Currently I have UTM doing NAT and FW rules. I have the TomatoUSB routers wan port bridged into the LAN network so that its basically just a switchport. This has been working great.
Now I have a need to add OpenVPN to the tomatoUSB as UTM doesnt support it, and I have lost some of my advanced scripts on tomatousb that activate on curtain ports/IP access my network.
Goal:
I want to have the tomatousb router to act as a router to the UTM. I was thinking of setting up the WAN port with a static IP (192.168.1.10/24) with a default gateway to the UTM (192.168.1.2/24). That way whats on my switchports will be forwarded out the WAN link but they should (in theory) be able to see all packets and route rather than switch.
Has anyone had success in doing this in the past? To keep all functionality of DDWRT/tomato behind the UTM? I have backups of all my config files right now, before I start fooling around with this, but wanted to see if anyone had any tips before i start.
