Which CPU works better AMD 8-Core or the Intel I3?

I'd rather disable the IPS for home use [:)]

I am planning on building a small cheap box to house my new Sophos UTM home.  Currently I have it on a laptop with a core2duo however with IDS turned on I can barely download at 35 Mbit/s and I have a 150 Mbit/s connection. 
So I am thinking o building a PC that would allow the IDS to work at 150 Mbit/s.

That being said, which CPU is better suited for that task?

Performancewise you should be perfectly fine with both (they play more or less in the same performance region)

Have a look in the Compare A8 with similar multithreaded Intel CPU's
AMD A8-3850 benchmarks

With UTM9.2 you should reach that figures easily with both CPU's.

2. if you only have a couple users, a CPU with faster cores is better than a CPU with lots of slower cores.

Get the fastest Haswell i3 available.

uh no..Apples to Apples AMd is generations behind Intel right now.  I would go with Intel any day than one of the AMD new "p-4's" they have right now.

The benchmarks don't support that statement...

$/performance has them about on par, pretty much as they have been for years. That said, if you've got $1k+ to spend on a CPU, Intel has the lead.

some do some don't overall AMD is well behind Intel in every area but price.  I've deployed AMD machines and the benchmarks aren't everything.  Putting two machine similarly configured side by side(which i have built and done) the intel machine runs away from the AMd easily.  If you want the best value for your money it's clear...Intel is the way to go.  If it's purely cost it's AMD.  In this case pay the extra $$ and go with the I-3.  You'll be glad you did especially with the heavy FPU operaitons UTM demands considering the AMD has only one fpu per two integer units..which is the biggest flaw in it's design.

A couple of other notes about this.  As a home user you're probably interested in keeping the power consumption to a minimum, so be sure to look into the power states you will be running and idling at (I'm assuming you'll be running this box 24/7).  And at 150Mbps download speed, you should at least look into an i5 CPU as it may make sense in the overall scheme of things.  Also make sure you have a reasonable amount of RAM for both performance (especially at 150Mbps) and power savings, so you're not constantly hitting the hard drive.  For myself, that would probably be 8Gb and conceivably more.

not much of a difference between i-3 and i-5..QC would actually hurt him..yes he may save a little power due to the i-5 never getting properly clocked up but he'd be better with a 3.0 ghz or faster i-3 until the new kernel makes it into the utm system.
