Intermitent network "blackouts"

I'm running a school network with about 50 machines. Lately we've been having these "blackouts" where the internet will shutdown and all network traffic will come to a screeching halt. They usually last 5 minutes or so. 

At first I thought it was because we were allowing students to bring their own devices putting a heavy load on our older Astaro 110/120 hardware. But I've just noticed strange stuff going on with the Astaro's RAM and CPU usage. 

For whatever reason, even when no one is here, the RAM always hovers at about 75%. The only machines that are even on overnight are the server and one admin machine we remote into. 

Also, we have these CPU spikes that shoot from 4% to 100%. I would think that was just peak stuff like when classes begin, but that kind of thing happens in the middle of the night also. 



We talked to the company that sold us the box, and they said we needed to upgrade and charged us $80 for the "assesment". The box just has 1GB of RAM, but it was running just fine until recently. And runs just fine most of the time besides these random blackouts that happen about once a day or so.

Any ideas?

    With 50 machines, the 120 is at its maximum for use with Firewall and Web on V8.  Apparently, you don't have Intrusion Protection activated because you would be at 100% most of the time.  Things to try: (1) If you don't have any rules based on Application, disable Network Visibility. (2) Reduce Reporting to one month.  Any luck?

    Certainly, you won't be able to upgrade to V9 with that unit.  In fact, given the growth in BYOD, I think even a new UTM 120 would be a short-term solution.  I would suggest a complete review of how a new UTM 220 with Full Guard might be the school's best investment.
