Portable AV?

A family member has a sick laptop that may have a virus infection.  The Admin account is not allowed to do any 'admin' tasks and only operates as a normal user account. We have found that some folders have incorrect permissions, such as system32, that prevents software being installed and as the Admin account is compromised we can't reset those permissions. We can't install any new software and the current AV will not run - so we are concerned.

Can we set up Sophos AV to be run from a USB memory stick created on another PC?  We don't want to alter the PC used to create the 'portable' AV system.

Is that possible and how do we do it, please?  Clearly we want to use the free version.

    About six months ago, I tried with the Sophos Virus Removal Tool in a similar situation, but was not successful.  I have Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 on a USB stick that I had to use for that problem.

    you have joined the Sophos UTM forum, where as I think you really want to be on the Sophos anti-virus forum.

    Thanks for that info, I'm downloading a copy now.

    What I'm trying to do is check whether the laptop, of a family member who lives 25 miles away, has been infected by a virus or similar.  It is not allowing us to install anything, not even Admin is allowed to!  

    I've got portable copies of Spybot, Clamwin and Kaspersky anti-rootkit installed onto a USB stick and updated them.  So I'll creatye a CD with Rescue Disk 10 so I have several ways to look at what is, or is not, happening.

    I registered to join the AV forum, entered the required details and the Sophos system showed me a forum page into which I could add my topic.  If it's the wrong one, I appologise but it was not of my choosing.

    Hi Mike,
    you don't have to apologies. I suspect one of the moderators might have to investigate to find why an AV question ended up in the UTM forum. I can take a guess, something to do with the dual AV in the UTM.

    Might need some better filtering.
