[9.105-9]Swap and memory use

Hi folks,
recently I had the opportunity to add additional 4gb of ram to my main UTM. I did for a short while a lot of extra functions which didn't work the way I expected.
Originally it had 4gb, was using approx 60% ram and swap was growing around 2% per day.
After adding the extra 4gb of ram, usage 29% and no swap.

I have two other utms, neither has the same number of features enabled and neither of them use any swap according to the graphs.

    i've got a client machine that with 100 users and 8 gigs of ram is swapping 14% steady...it is only using 49% of ram.  While the swap amount isn't bad with as much ram as is in there it shouldn't swap at all.

    Hi William,
    this one has 37 active ip addresses, mix of 4 and 6.
    It is a quad core e3 low power v2. 

    Where as the other two on a busy day might get 6 active addresses.

    Thought this might of interest to some people on the ubb.

    Hi Guys
    I found tuning to IPS to one instance has made a big change to the Ram usage. Before the IPS was using 3Gb of Ram by itself then add the HTTP Proxy on top of that. Now from memory IPS only uses under 500Mb Ram.
    Here is my machine after latest patch and 6hrs of running.

    The client i am referring to has his own internal webservers..etc etc etc..so i have to run a large set.  HOwever there is no reason for any swap to be used with only 3.9 gig of 8 used....

    I agree, I don't understand the memory usage in this environment. I have a client machine with 8Gb Ram and currently using only 1/4 of that with no proxies and still uses swap file. I have SNMP Management server running with 4Gb Ram and no swap file in use. This discussion has been had lots of times over many versions for many years. The answer that the developers have told us in previous forums is to put in SSD drives and more memory. I think it just means shutup. Otherwise I believe it is a good product.

    You have to differ between "using swap" and "having slow performance".

    Swapping doesn't automatically mean that your RAM is filled up. It may either mean "I do not need this data at the moment, so I'll move it to disk for potential later use... Lalala..." (-> no performance impact) or "Sh*t, my memory is filled up, I have to free up something!" (-> performance impact).

    My Home UTM has 8GB of RAM (30% to 50% used) and also does some swapping (~10%). But I have absolutely no performance issues, so why bother?

    the devs have said they find swap a valid use of memory..period.  They are very microsoft like in their thinking about memory management..[:)]
