Astaro Virtual Appliance

Hello.

Looking to find some information on the virtual appliance for vmware vsphere esx server.

Couple of quesitons right of the bat.

First, how does the internet connection work?  Do you need a separate ethernet connection on the esx server itself to represent the network connection from the ISP (wan side)?

Second, can the virtual appliance be vmotioned to other esx servers?  If so, how is the wan side network connection configured on multiple esx servers?

    Software license and virtual appliance license are not the same as far as I know.
    You will need a software license to install on yne software install.

    Virtual Appliances are covered under the software licenses Gilipeled.  I run the Home Use license which is 'software only' and seems to like my ESXi 4 box. I've also seen the SKU sheet and foot notes in the sheet indicate virtual appliances are covered under software licenses.[;)]

    As for installing a virtual appliance, don't bother with the premade UTM appliances. Setting up your own vm under your favorite hypervisor (ESXi, HyperV, KVM) and installing from the software ISO is just as quick and gives you more control over the specs. The software ISO since v8 can detect you're in a virtual environment and install the guest tools automatically.

    Hi group, while we're on this topic, I set the vm for suse9-64bit.  I notice that vmxnet2 is available for a network adapter.  I'm familiar with the benefits of using vmxnet3 (aka split network over multiple cpu's) but it is not an option for suse9.

    Should I choose vmxnet2 over e1000?  If so, what are the benefits?

    I logged in as root to the astaro and noticed it was suse9 according to /etc/version

    I believe /etc/version contains the UTM version; at least mine says 9.007004, which matches the UTM version running.

    You're right!  The proper file would be /etc/SuSE-release but it is missing.  I can't tell what version it is but other forum posts would suggest astaro 8 is running on suse11.  So, I can now use vmxnet3.  Thanks!
