Linux Noob

Hi folks,

I've had a bare smattering of exposure to Linux and I'd like to start getting my head around it.
I've had plenty of exposure to all manner of server (and Hyper-V) deployments from SMB to enterprise, but it's all been Windows-based (not counting my CP/M, ZCPR initial entry).

Aside from downloading some ISO and playing with it, were would you point a Linux noob for some self-education?

    Hey Jimmy,

    Just a quick note. BSD is not linux, BSD (Berkley Software Distribution) is one of the original Unix variants. Very similar to linux in many ways (linux is considered a unix like operating system) but also quite different. There are also a few variants of BSD with different focuses, such as OpenBSD, NetBSD, & FreeBSD. Apple's OSX is also a descendent of BSD, deriving aspects of it's design from the BSD's as well as NextStep/OpenStep.

    Still worth learning, even if just for fun and keeping your skills sharp.

    Yup.  BSD is very different.
    I use BSD mostly for web servers and file servers.
    I'm not nearly as fluent in BSD as I am in Linux.

    Also, are you looking at unix based desktops, or servers?

    For desktops, I think Ubuntu is great!  But, for servers, I can't say I'm a fan of Ubuntu.  I've run a few Ubuntu LTSP, but that's about it.  Ubuntu can be a bit of a pig for other tasks.
