Linux Noob

Hi folks,

I've had a bare smattering of exposure to Linux and I'd like to start getting my head around it.
I've had plenty of exposure to all manner of server (and Hyper-V) deployments from SMB to enterprise, but it's all been Windows-based (not counting my CP/M, ZCPR initial entry).

Aside from downloading some ISO and playing with it, were would you point a Linux noob for some self-education?

Thx,
JIm

  • Just try it. Take a Linux distribution of your choice (e.g. Ubuntu), install in a VM and start playing.

Try to setup a Samba server, DNS server (Bind), DHCP server, print server (CUPS), etc.

Search Google, if you don't get further. Try some tutorials...
For the basic commands search for "linux cheat sheet".

Just a hint: The server versions usually come without a gui. That's what a pure linux is: managed through the shell. [;)]
