I have a highly automated home that is also my lab.   I have around 200 IP addresses in uses between devices (TVs, VoIP phones, audio/video gear, ...), switches, servers (physical and virtual), ....   I originally used Astaro Home back in version 7, but had to move away because of the 50 device limit.   I also travel a lot so it is important for the firewall to always be up and running so I can get into the house in the event of an issue.   The significant other does not like it when I say wait until I get home.[:O].   I moved to pFsense, but would like to come back to Sophos / Astaro.   I have thought about using the free network essential edition, but I really want a failover cluster, and would like to use the integrated wireless capabilities.

From what I can tell for the software appliance a user = an IP address which makes Sophos UTM prohibitively expensive.    Is my understanding correct?   If not please educate me.

Any thoughts on options I might be missing.

    If you want features your not going to get them for free

    Utm 120 hardware = around 400 I think

    But it comes with a default basic licenses that should give you unlimited ip 


    For HA failover just by 2 

    800-1000 bucks probably isn't that much considering the amount invested in the house already

    UTM 110/120 hardware MSRP's around $600 which includes Essentials Edition. If you want HA you have to add a subscription.

    You are right that software counts IP's as users. It does lead to over-counting sometimes but to be honest I've never seen a method of counting users on a network that was 100% accurate. Concurrent users is probably the closest but even that has potential limitations.

    There are things you can do to reduce the IP count, none of which are really sanctioned by Astaro/Sophos but have been debated on this forum before. Printers for example you can remove the default gateway & dns entries in the config which should keep them invisible to the UTM.
