UTM9 | 3G USB Dongle

Hi

Is 3G USB Dongle Supported on UTM9?

Reason: Fail Over when the main Internet Connection drops.

I plugged my Huawei E1750 to a HP Proliant ML110
1) On the Front USB Ports - the stick does not light up at all.
2) On the Back USB Ports - the stick does light up.
3) I checked UTM9 Interface and Hardware I do not see it listed.

This stick is proven to work on the RED10.

Thus just want to check to confirm indeed UTM9 does NOT support 3G USB Stick for Fail Over OR am I doing it wrongly.

    You have to reboot your UTM after you pluged in the 3G dongle

    - Thanks for the reply.

    - I did restart the HP ML110 Server.

    - I checked Network Interface -> Hardware - I only see my 3NIC.

    I would politely suggest you are doing something wrong a little bit. You are assuming all USB ports are equal.

    I have to try various ports before I find one that will work with my 3g dongle. My home UTM 9 has 6 ports on the back, only 2 work with the dongle. A restart each time is very frustrating, butt hat is USB for you.

    There was also an upgrade to the driver in one of the recent up2date, not sure which one.

    - Thank You for confirming 3G USB Dongle does work for you.

    - Thank You for explaining that I should test plugging to Every USB Port and restart.

    - I did it for all 4 ports (2 front and 2 back) - Plug in - Lit Up - Restart.

    - It does not appear under Interface - Hardware.

    - The Difference between front and back ports would be the front ports takes about 1 minute before the USB Stick blinks but the ports at the back is instant.

    - The same stick works on RED10 so I assume it is a supported stick.

    AFAIK 3G USB sticks aren't supposed to show up at the Network Interfaces >> Hardware tab at all!

    Please go to "Network Interfaces >> Interfaces" and see if you can create a new interface of type "3G/UMTS" and that you can select the corresponding ttyUSB hardware device.

    YES !

    New Interface - Change from Ethernet -> 3G and under Hardware it would appear.

    From the lusb it seems I have USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 ports on my server?

    Obviously connecting to USB 2.0 would be better right?

    How to determine which port is USB 2.0?

    Objective: Use WAN 100% -> Fail Over to 3G Only when WAN is Down.

    Attempted using Standby Interface with 3G but it takes more than 30 seconds to be up.

    Thus I decided to put 3G under ACTIVE with the following concept.
    WAN - Weight 100
    3G  - Weight 0
    The concept is use WAN 100% and only use 3G when WAN is down. (That is the way I understand from the help page)

    I set Persistant to 1 minute ( The help file only has 1 line about this which is not helpful) but I take it as if the Default is 1 hour, it means even if WAN comes up, I would remain on 3G for the next 1 hour before I would check the Weight and decide that WAN should take over completely based on the WAN 100 3G 0.

    Problem: I used streaming online radio to test which needs about 25kbps, even when I set to 1 minute, with my WAN UP - I do not see the 3G Traffic go down.

    Reason this is a concern as 3G is NOT Unlimited.
