in this way i can setup other rules in peace and have time for coffee-break

I once tracked a phishing attempt to a subnet belonging to the Chinese military. The scary part was that they had a public name server that was invisible but resolved names. I still don't understand how they do that.  Was anyone surprised that they showed off a copy of an as-of-then unannounced American stealth aircraft?  We have to hope that the people of China and Russia gain control and finally take their countries away from the warlords and criminals.

Is it possible to set an exemption to country blocking for a client in China..??

Karl, unfortunately, that has been deemed a "feature request" item by the Astaro Developers -- there's no way to create an exception to the country blocking rules currently.  Please go to feature.astaro.com and place a vote there for adding this capability.

I figured as much seeing as it is the first rule applied, looks like i'll be looking for another way to block Chinese access

Um... We do a lot of business with China, and Russia, and a number of former eastern block countries and so on.  No problems.

Yes there have been issues with Chinese and Russian hackers, but US hackers, (and spammers!) cause a lot of issues around the world also.

In any case, any half decent hacker is hardly going to be stopped by a country block on the IP address...

Let me give a couple of examples of why country-based blocking is extremely useful:

1. One of the sites I run, DealBert.net Deal Search, gets HAMMERED by BaiduSpider. Baidu (a Chinese search engine) claims they obey robots.txt, but they lie.
As our site focuses on the North American market, there is little value to allowing traffic from China, so we have blocked it, and this has significantly reduced the load on our server.
Baidu has MANY IP and network addresses, so it would be very time-consuming to create and maintain a blocklist; it's much more efficient to block the country.

2. On another site, we are getting lots of WordPress comment and feedback spam posted by people in India (I assume someone is paying them). So, we would like to block India.
However, we also have some contractors in India, and as there's no way to add an exception to the country blocking, we aren't able to block. [:(]

I agree. We're a regional healthcare provider, but occasionally we have to visit a couple of Chinese based healthcare sites. I used country-blocking but managers screamed about the need to access these sites. I put in a global allow for specific Chinese domains, but it's really dicey whether or not it works. But - luckily, the managers listen to me when I forward them further headlines and explain that "China is where cooties come from..."

if you aren't using akismet turn it on..it's free.  There's also tons of plugins for WP that will greatly increase the spam filtering abilities.  There's no need to use a nuclear bomb when a couple of good flyswatters work.
