Which Hardware as Router only?

Hi all,

I need a fast router for a Gigabit WAN Connection. The firewall speed of the ASG 120 is stated with 1,8Gbit/s so this should be enough. The connection will be used by 60 clients and 15 servers. I think the 1Gbit/s will be fully used from time to time. I will not set any firewall rules (allow any any), so routing only is the target.

Can anybody tell me if the ASG 120 should be enough? Or should I buy a ASG220?

Additionaly I need the ability to set static routes - is this possible with the free Version of ASG? No more features will be necessary, so I would buy the hardware only without any subscriptions.

    Hi, Tom, and welcome to the User BB!

    For the record, I think the 120 would work but be at the limit of its capabilities.  With a GB WAN connection (wow!), I'd probably recommend a 220.  If ever you decided to add a Network Security subscription, a 120 would not be adequate.

    Having said that, if you're the reseller, you should confirm with Astaro.  If you're the customer, you should get your reseller to comment - better that the reseller should have some "skin ii the game."

    220 at that speed?  with that many packets I would build your own box with dual core(possibly quad) 3.0ghz or faster and 4 gigs of ram..something the 220 isn't going to do.

    Hi All,

    For plain statefull firewalling with NAT and static routing (yes we can do that). The ASG120 will be enough yet, can reach its limits, especially when some of the reporting is running. 

    At home I use an ASG220 with 3x 100mbit with uplink balancing, firewall, ips, web filtering, application control, wireless and reporting and the system has less than 30% utilization, therefore it should easily handle your requirements.

    How many concurrent connections do you expect?

    a 3x 100 is nothing compared to line speed of gigabits routing through a x86 class cpu and ram.

    Normally we use Cisco 6500 or 7200 Series for routing gigabit, but in this case there is no existing hardware in place at the customer so I thought about an inexpensive solution. I like to work with the Astaro Security Gateways (we have 2 Clusters in use already). I would like to use a hardware appliance, I do not like to use the software solution on server based hardware if it is not necessary.

    We are the provider for this solution, but its not in production at this time. So I have no information about concurrent connections for the moment. If we buy a ASG120 or ASG220 and it doesnt fit we can use it in another project, so no money is lost.

    I think we buy a ASG220, I think it should be ok.

    Hi Tom,

    To be clear, the 1.8Gbit/s of the ASG 120 Rev4 is not a theoretical number; it is achieved in our testing labs, however it would be unlikely you could exceed this figure, and it would be for pure Firewalling only - other load would affect it.

    My ASG 120 Rev4 runs with 2x100Mb lines that I frequently fully max with downloading, and it works just fine during those times. I use also all services except for Mail Filtering and WebApp Firewall. 

    A 220 would meet your goals as outlined easily enough.
