home web filter profile authentication question

I have an Astaro 8.202 box setup on my home network and use it for web filtering.  It is setup to statically assign IP addresses to the systems on my network.  I then setup each IP address as a Host in the Network Definitions section.  I have several hosts put together in network groups.  These network groups are put in the source networks box for the appropriate transparent proxy profiles.

So far, everything is working well, however, I'm confused as to how to setup web filtering for one of our laptops.

We have two different user logins on the laptop and I want to provide different web filtering based on the user that is logged in rather than just the IP.  I'm trying to figure out how to authenticate the user of the laptop and provide web filtering unique to the user.

I have installed the Astaro Authentication Agent on the laptop.  I'm just not sure how to setup Astaro web filtering for this laptop based on users.

Is it possible to do a transparent proxy with user authentication through the AAA?

I have a few users setup under users and groups and set them to locally authenticated.  What do I put under the source networks in the proxy profile?

I've read some of the documentation and have done some web searching, but most of it doesn't quite address what I need.  If there is something else out there that I should review first, please let me know.

    I have been able to figure out how to setup Astaro to use either the agent or browser authentication and pick different filtering profiles based on the user authenticated, however, I'm still having problems with this.

    The testing I did worked, however, I couldn't get the system to understand when a different user logged into the laptop.   I had trouble trying to install the AAA such that it authenticated as a particular user on one login and then a different user on a different login.  The browser authentication also had issues - we had to wait for a authentication timeout before Astaro would ask to log in again.

    Is there a better way of doing this without having to setup some sort of external authentication (active directory, etc.)?

    AD or something similar is probably your best bet.  I only use AD for when i need authentication.

    I don't know of a way to set the auth timeout for anything but 'Transparent with authentication' - that's on the 'Advanced' tab.

    Are you saying that you installed the Agent in different profiles, and it's getting the users mixed up?  Are you sure you installed it in each user's local settings?  That's "supposed" to work!?!

    Now that you mention it, I'm not sure that I have the agent correctly installed in each user's local settings.  I'll have to check on this.  Are there any specific instructions on how to get to work?  I'd really rather not have to setup an Active Directory on my home network just for this one laptop.

    The installation program should automatically install in the active user's profile.  If you only installed it once, then you installed the same one for everyone.

    As Bob alludes to, the AAA installs on a per user basis and stores information in a users profile.  You will need to install it separately for each user that logs onto a system.

    Thanks for pointing me to the install of AAA as the potential problem.  I worked on this for several hours last night and finally figured out what the issue was.   I had assumed that AAA worked after one install for both users given that when I tried to install it on the other user account, the install didn't appear to work (it didn't report issues though).

    I finally figured out that having the second account a standard Windows 7 account instead of an administrator account was not allowing the AAA install to complete correctly.  When the install started, it asked for admin privileges and I assumed that would be enough for it to install, however, it didn't complete the install and didn't report any errors.

    I switch the account to an administrator account, installed AAA and then switch the account back.  In retrospect, I could have just right clicked and said "run as administrator".   

    Astaro seems to be behaving correctly with the AAA installed separately in the 2 accounts.  I'm still trying to figure out exactly when the Astaro box reauthenticates against the AAA when you switch users or log in / log out of users.  I have been able to switch between the 2 users and still see the other users filter.  My guess is that this has to do with the authentication timeout in the web filter Advanced tab.

    Yeah, it's probably caching.  You can try to force the issue, by having the user right-click on the tray icon, choose Set Credentials, and click ok to re-authenticate after switching users.

    The Agent software is getting an overhaul for ASG version 9.0, where the program itself will be installed once for all users, then only user specific info will be stored in a users profile.  If we're very lucky, the install package will have a silent switch to allow for mass remote deployment.
