VMWare ESXi or Hyper-V

We are about to setup an Astaro virtual appliance. Is there any guidance (or just opinions from those with experience) on using VMWare ESXi vs Win 2008 R2 Hyper-V? Does either product in their current versions win in terms of performance/resource usage/anything else?

Both products support our hardware (Dell PowerEdge 1950 with Intel VT Quad card). I'll probably use at least one other Win 2008 guest plus another Unix guest along side the Astaro guest.

I can't decide. Tell me what to do.

    If you're planning to use a mix of Linux/Unix & Windows guests (Astaro would count as Linux), your best bet is VMware's ESXi. VMware designed ESX(i) to be OS agnostic from the ground up whereas M$ Hyper-V seems to have added linux support (and SUSE Enterprise only at first) as more of an afterthought.

    VMware ESX(i) is smaller, it can be installed on a 4GB USB stick, which means it uses less of your precious disk space, none if you use a USB stick.

    Smaller translates into a more compact OS which means a smaller attack surface (more secure), less resources used by the hypervisor (better performance and/or more guests).

    I also don't like paying the M$ tax but Hyper-V is now free so that took the wind out of those sails. [:D]

    I concur with Drew ... if you want to run Linux, expecially mixed with Windows, virtual machines, ESXi is the way to go.
