MiFi Wifi as Dual WAN Connection

Greetings,

I am in the process of setting up a home installation of Astaro.   I have a new MiFi 4150L 4G device.  This device only supports internet access via WiFi.  You can charge via USB, but you can not use it as a USB modem.

I have a cable modem as my primary connection to the internet, but I want to use the MiFi as a backup or secondary connection.  Is it possible to use WiFi as a secondary connection?  I know I could use a Wireless Bridge and have take the ethernet port and use that as a secondary WAN connection, but I was hoping to not have another piece of hardware running.

    Hi Shockalot,

    Short answer is no you can't.

    Astaro doesn't support *any* WiFi cards at the present time, primarily because linux support for WiFi cards isn't quite there yet. On linux Desktop distro's like Ubuntu it often "just works" if you purchase a compatible card but given the variety of cards out there, some of which have alpha/beta drivers, some of which use the NDIS wrapper, some of which use out of kernel drivers, it's just not clean enough out there where you can script the detection & configuration into a web based system.

    I'm pretty sure the only way you'll be able to make that happen is via the wireless bridge. However, you'll be glad to know that the wireless bridge configuration does work. I have mine set up to fail over to my neighbor's wireless in the event that mine goes down using a Linksys wireless bridge. It works quite well.
