Finally i have my astaro box

Hello all after month and month of wait i buit my astaro box.

I got a fanless computer like a huge piece of aluminium and i just throw a ay some useless stuff and added a silent fan to cool down this aluminium bloc.

I did the usb installation which worked perfectly.

Now i have some questions cause i'm more a system guy and absolutely not a network guy ;-)

- as i saw on the forum dns is working if you enter static entries, yeah but i have the same problem as some others : nslookup works but not ping if someone have a link i will apreciate.

- i don't know where to start for firewall rules and security stuff.

- i have few soft that need ports to be open, i saw steam is ok on the forum, i saw skype is working but in a strange way if someone can explain, and i'm using mobilme on different device i saw it was a nightmare to set up is it true ? 

- regarding proxy set up i will work on that after cause no hurry.

- can i block my network access to only specified mac address ? 

Actually i don't have internet i have a huge isp problem so i'm using my iphone to read the forum ... Not really easy.

If some person can help i will really apreciate.

    In WebAdmin>>Network Security>>Firewall or Packet Filter (depending on the version you are running)>>ICMP Tab.  This is where you can enable ping.

    i don't know where to start for firewall rules and security stuff.
    Best practice is to only open necessary ports.  For a typical beginning home user, a good starting point for a rule is Internal (Network)-Any-Any.  If you want more details, please be more specific.  Also, look in the in-line help within WebAdmin....it's the blue question mark button in the upper right.

    Easiest way to setup skype is by using the SOCKS5 proxy.  Nothing strange about that.  There's a good thread at https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/55/t/45070 for exceptions needed for common home use apps.

    Nope, but you can block accesses based on IP, network, or even country.

    I will try to take a look of those topics.
    I also have a ps3 but i saw that socks5 proxy can solve this.

    I will start to create those rules as soon as my internet line come back.

    As u told me i will unlock step by step and i was alreday planning to do the any any for internal lan.

    I will also put a vpn access to be able to connect from outside.

    And for the ping i have to check but i thought that icmp was only for the router not for the all device on lan.

    This is not only for the router itself, but also to allow such packets to pass through the device.
