asg on mac

I have a small LAN and wanna try asg. 
I've got 2 xbox360, ps3, imac 2010 model and pc, iPad, ipod touch, Droid incredible. 

Is like gaming untouched. Cept web filtering for ps3 browser. 

Now my LAN is modem to Cisco wifi router to switch. I need asg as bridge cus I'm on Cisco eft team. So I already have router. 

Can I put asg on mac to test it? No $. I'm broke. What I wanna do is try it on mac with it doing the filtering for web and av. Reporting might be cool too. 

Also could I put hardware pc with asg after modem but before router? I need all wifi and wired filtered.

    I don't know if Astaro will boot on a EFI/UEFI BIOS, but you can try it.

    Note that Astaro needs at least 2 NICs.

    Yes. Disable DHCP in the router, and only use the Internal/LAN ports... Don't plug anything on the WAN port of the router.

    I'm not talking about using asg on MAC only but virtual box.
    I have router so asg won't be doing that if I put it in on its own pc. I'm on Cisco eft so I use the Cisco as router and have to keep it that way. I would want asg filtering only in that way.

    Yes you can do it this way.  You'll need to have two virtual NICs for the Astaro VM.  Astaro provides preconfigured VMWare VMs at ftp://ftp.astaro.de/ASG/v8/virtual_appliance/.  You used to be able to import vmdks to VirtualBox.  Might be worth a try, just to get a quick test install to play with.

    Well I have virtual box as its free. Someone told me it could open a vmware player image but when I downloaded asg I got a bunch of files that didn't seem like they were of any use. I downloaded a VMWare asg and extracted it to find a bunch of vdx or something files. I don't know what to do with them.

    But if I can run asg I wanna test it before giving it its own real pc. Learn it a bit and see how it works and if I can get it to do what I want.

    So I don't know what these extracted files are.

    Should be vdmx.  This is a VMWare virtual machine file.  Looks like VirtualBox dropped support for VMWare images in version 4.x.  You can just download a regular asg iso and install it to a new VM in VirtualBox.

    Virtual box does have an import but I think I tried it and didn't work but forget if I tried.

    The first time I tried ASG I downloaded the software appliance ISO and installed it on a new VMWare Fusion VM.  As Scott says, you'd be able to do the same thing under VirtualBox without paying for Fusion.  It might be just as quick to take this route as trying to import a VM in another format.  Also, you then get to go through the full ASG install process plus configuration, which would be useful practice prior to doing the same thing on a dedicated box.

    How can I install the ISO in vbox and have asg provide filtering, logging and monitoring only for my wired and wifi?

    Remember I've already got a wifi router that I need to use since I'm part of the Cisco eft.

    I'm also very interested in this. Thinking about buying a MacMini and run Astaro in a VM. Not much more expensive then buying a good dedicated machine for the Astaro but I'd have the ability to run other server apps on the machine.


    Does anyone use Astaro on a Mac VM?

    You can run the virtual appliance of asg in fusion, but you need at least 2 nics, on a mac mini standard you have only one. I don't know if the usb-ethernet adapter from Apple is supported in fusion
