Astaro joins Sophos to take Security to the next Level

Dear UBB users, 

as you have seen the last 24 months, Astaro has work hard and  continously to bring our UTM product ahead of the competion. With the new offerings of Astaro RED, Astaro Web Application Security, Astaro Wireless Security and Astaro Mail Archiving we have already outpaced our competition in terms of innovation speed and we don't plan to stop. [:)] 

End of last year we announced Astaro Endpoint Security with the aquisition of CoSoSys, as the next step to fullfill our Asaro Security Wall Strategy.

Beginning of the year, Sophos approach Astaro with the idea to bring the two companies together and merge the award-winning Sophos Endpoint Security with the award-winning Astaro Security Gateway to build the next big thing in Security.

And today, i am proud to announce that this will happen, as we have signed a definitive agreement to be aquired by Sophos.

Together with Sophos we will offer a complete security solution, deliver protection regardless of where the user is, what device they are using, or where the company’s network boundary may lie.

So your big question now might be, what is going to change?

The biggest change is: "The Product will get even better!"

More Features
Sophos own's great technology in many areas like NAC, DLP, Patch Management, Vulnerability Scanning and more, where we now have access to and can integrate into our Security Gateway.

Better Quality
Sophos has one of the best malware engines available and their continous problem free updates through SophosLabs will make our product best in class.

Better Performance
Since Years, we want to further improve the performance of UTM functions, but often were limited as the vendors we license technology from where  not always cooperative.
This now will change, as we have direct access to the Experts at sophos to thighter integrate and to improve performance.

    I've been using Astaro Home user version for a number of years now...And I'm happy with it. 

    However, I'm a little skeptical about how this will all turn out in the long term. Its an all-too-familiar theme where a business buys out another in today's world...And it often results in the complete destruction of what was once good. 

    One example is the free Windows-based firewall: Online Armor free. Version 4 was good and didn't bare too much load on the system. Then the developer sold it to an anti-malware company in the last couple of months. After that, Version 5 came out. Developed by the new team. 

    Guess what happened? Its bloated, unresponsive, chatty/annoying, and even forgets the settings or rules you set it! ...This new version turned me off, and I went back to using WinXP Pro and Win7 Pro with Limited/Standard User, Software Restriction Policy, Windows's own firewall. (Since this configuration adds no bloat to the system.)

    It would be concerning if they replace avira (AntiVir engine) with a Sophos-based AV engine in the Home Edition of ASG...Mainly because shadowserver.org's yearly AV stats for zero day malware shows the avira AV engine doing the better job. (Sophos engine is not doing all that much better than the free ClamAV engine developed by the open source community.)

    ie: Out of 26,703,631 zero-day malware over 12 months:
    AntiVir => detected: 24,386,075 = 91.32%
    Sophos => detected: 22,108,950 = 82.79%
    ClamAV => detected: 21,188,659 = 79.35%

    Look, blowing happy public-relations smoke about how everything will be great is one thing; but its the actions that many of us will be looking at. Actions will be far louder than any words.

    (Yes, people do deserve incentive/reward/payment for the work they put in. And Astaro deserves to expand and grow like any other business who's worked hard at providing quality products and solutions...Its the other guy that we're worried about. They are very likely to have a much different vision of what success is. More often than not, modern managers are more concerned with short term gains at the cost of long term prosperity.)

    On the other hand, if ASG maintains its identity/character under Sophos, then I'm all too happy to stay and recommend the product to others in my local area. (Small businesses.)

    I suggest a ASG roadmap of some sort to ease any doubts.

     its performance in terms of virus and malware scanning is usually in the bottom half in most credible tests.


    Just had a look at AV-Comparatives - Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software - Welcome to AV-Comparatives.org and Sophos doesn't score well on detection really.  (Not compared to Avira).

    I really hope Astaro don't drop Avira for Sophos!  (At least not till Sophos can claim much better detection rates).

    astaro gateway is not just like another product and its forums is not like ordinary forums but its like family to people [:@]

    if sophos is serious to increase its business and future of astaro gateway and contribution of beta testers  free lancers all thou people who put their great contribution to these forums they have to do at least 3 things 

    1st dont change default forums dont make people to migrate to sophos forums instead link the default one 

    2nd we welcome if sophos added with avira its would be great move rather than replacing avira and pushing their own antivirus 

    3 they have to chose flexibility to make product better by listening to community rather than pushing things or this astaro family break at end heavy losses would be their side as well by recreating new family because many great brain migrate to other projects or something new or similar to astaro born [:P]

    i pray to god give them enough brain to make Astaro ++ rather than destroying it

    Add me to the list of people skeptical about the fact that this merger will yield anything positive for the Astaro users. 

    Maybe it was necessary to keep the company alive (I hope not) but past experience with mergers in general and Sophos product line in particular doesn't lead me to look forward with confidence.

    I've been running several Asatro system for my company and, outside the fact that local support is abysmally bad (got platinum and direct support is really good) and that obtaining a license is really difficult, I've really loved it. The product is good, has lots of useful features and allowed us to provide more features to our users and our customers while at the same time lowering certain cost items.

    Today, the news of the merger is putting all that in jeopardy: I have little confidence in Sophos to be able to provide the same cost effectiveness and quality than I found in Astaro and, while I don't think the product will "go bad" in the short therm, changing firewall isn't exactly something that can happen in the short therm and I will therefore have to start looking for alternatives.

    I'm truly sorry it's coming to that: I really like the product as it is today and I would love to keep working with it. Unfortunately, confidence is a fragile thing and, simply put, I don't trust Sophos in the medium term to keep the Astaro line of product in good shape (in particular ASL).

    Crystal Ball: slower support, higher prices, limited free-trails, no "free use" for home users. Time to look at open source alternatives? Can we find one better than Astaro? Well, yes the GOOD companies ARE bought, to stop competition. Am I skeptical? No, I'm way way past skeptical.

    As I've already commented, I hope that Sophos is as smart as HP was when it ate Compaq - none of the good Compaq items were discontinued, but a lot of really good HP stuff was discontinued because the Compaq stuff was more successful - that means that it was "better" in a sense.

    It would be nice if Gert's equal at Sophos would comment here.

    Try calling tech support.  All you get is leave a voicemail for the last several days.  When finally someone gets back to  you they are somewhat inept, not like before.  I have had nothing but good experiences with astaro support and the bar has reached a new low in the last 5 days.  I got severe issues with the ASG 220 and  no one reponds to emails or telephone messages left.  The Sophos affect has already started.  Don't be fooled by the slick talk of merging the products.  The money has already left the building.  I going to cisco real quick for UTM.  They will be around for awhile and not a candidate for an acquisition.

    My opinion is that there's no way currently to tell how this is going to pan out in the end.  As long as Astaro is allowed to be a semi-autonomous division within Sophos it should be a good thing in the long run.  Guess we'll have to wait and see.

    It may be more to do with the office move and a ton of meetings rather than any imagined Sophos influence.
