Astaro joins Sophos to take Security to the next Level

Dear UBB users, 

as you have seen the last 24 months, Astaro has work hard and  continously to bring our UTM product ahead of the competion. With the new offerings of Astaro RED, Astaro Web Application Security, Astaro Wireless Security and Astaro Mail Archiving we have already outpaced our competition in terms of innovation speed and we don't plan to stop. [:)] 

End of last year we announced Astaro Endpoint Security with the aquisition of CoSoSys, as the next step to fullfill our Asaro Security Wall Strategy.

Beginning of the year, Sophos approach Astaro with the idea to bring the two companies together and merge the award-winning Sophos Endpoint Security with the award-winning Astaro Security Gateway to build the next big thing in Security.

And today, i am proud to announce that this will happen, as we have signed a definitive agreement to be aquired by Sophos.

Together with Sophos we will offer a complete security solution, deliver protection regardless of where the user is, what device they are using, or where the company’s network boundary may lie.

So your big question now might be, what is going to change?

The biggest change is: "The Product will get even better!"

More Features
Sophos own's great technology in many areas like NAC, DLP, Patch Management, Vulnerability Scanning and more, where we now have access to and can integrate into our Security Gateway.

Better Quality
Sophos has one of the best malware engines available and their continous problem free updates through SophosLabs will make our product best in class.

Better Performance
Since Years, we want to further improve the performance of UTM functions, but often were limited as the vendors we license technology from where  not always cooperative.
This now will change, as we have direct access to the Experts at sophos to thighter integrate and to improve performance.

Better Support
As a growing company, scalling high quality support is always a challenge, with Sophos expertise and processes in 24x7 support, combined with our support experts, we can deliver a more responsive and better support than ever.

    Ok, then here we go:

    You say this is a merger, but quite frankly the way it is communicated by Sophos is that this is a buy-out of Astaro, not a merger. A big fish eats a smaller fish, digests the parts that are of value, and 'lets go' the rest. Happens every day in business. The sad part is that usually (except in some  very very rare cases!) once the big fish has completed the digestion there won't be much left of the small fish.

    You say this is a merger. Does that mean that we will see a new 'Astaro Sophos GmbH' or 'Astaro Sophos Ltd' then?

    What concerns me is that from what I have seen so far looks very much like Sophos buying out Astaro with the goal to integrate some or even all of Astaro's products and/or technology into Sophos. This doesn't mean the same is necessarily true for the Astaro head office or even its staff. Knowing Sophos, I have the very strong feeling that one of the first things they 'merge' is support, which very likely means that Sophos gives support for Astaro products to the chart-reading monkeys they already use and which don't sit in Germany.

    Also, I wonder why Astaro even agreed to this buyout (or 'merger' if you want). Just to build a partnership a buyout/merger isn't necessary, in fact many working partnerships are between financially independent partners. I'm sure ISVs like Sophos would have glady accepted a technology partnership if this was indeed the aim. Additionally, Sophos' products aren't usually considered to be amongst the top performing contenders (especially outside the UK, while over here 'buying British' still often dominates procurement decisions), which makes this 'merger' even more confusing, and raises the question why no technological partnership with Avira, any of the other ISVs or even Sophos has been sought. But of course Avira and many others are unlikely to be able to buy out Astaro.

    So quite frankly, my guts tell me that the only reason for this aquisition is merely a financial one. Considering all this looks much more like a buyout than a true merger, I get the impression that the reason might have been financial difficulties (either already existing ones or arising ones). I really can't see how customers' interests are served with this, when in fact they aren't. Gaining access to each other's technology doesn't require a buyout.

    It's a real shame, and another blow for Germany's IT industry. I guess in two year's time there won't be much left of the name "Astaro" or the original Astaro staff, and the quality of the former Astaro products and the support for it will have been 'aligned' to the level of the other Sophos stuff.

    So yes, one could say that I am slightly concerned.
