Astaro joins Sophos to take Security to the next Level

Dear UBB users, 

as you have seen the last 24 months, Astaro has work hard and  continously to bring our UTM product ahead of the competion. With the new offerings of Astaro RED, Astaro Web Application Security, Astaro Wireless Security and Astaro Mail Archiving we have already outpaced our competition in terms of innovation speed and we don't plan to stop. [:)] 

End of last year we announced Astaro Endpoint Security with the aquisition of CoSoSys, as the next step to fullfill our Asaro Security Wall Strategy.

Beginning of the year, Sophos approach Astaro with the idea to bring the two companies together and merge the award-winning Sophos Endpoint Security with the award-winning Astaro Security Gateway to build the next big thing in Security.

And today, i am proud to announce that this will happen, as we have signed a definitive agreement to be aquired by Sophos.

Together with Sophos we will offer a complete security solution, deliver protection regardless of where the user is, what device they are using, or where the company’s network boundary may lie.

So your big question now might be, what is going to change?

The biggest change is: "The Product will get even better!"

More Features
Sophos own's great technology in many areas like NAC, DLP, Patch Management, Vulnerability Scanning and more, where we now have access to and can integrate into our Security Gateway.

Better Quality
Sophos has one of the best malware engines available and their continous problem free updates through SophosLabs will make our product best in class.

Better Performance
Since Years, we want to further improve the performance of UTM functions, but often were limited as the vendors we license technology from where  not always cooperative.
This now will change, as we have direct access to the Experts at sophos to thighter integrate and to improve performance.

Better Support
As a growing company, scalling high quality support is always a challenge, with Sophos expertise and processes in 24x7 support, combined with our support experts, we can deliver a more responsive and better support than ever.

These are also the reason why we are very excited about this, the Astaro Founders and the Astaro Management Team will continue to lead the new Network Security Business within Sophos.

    I feel very sad and am a bit frustrated about this assimilation of a great company that made IT in Germany.
    We are just about to realise an upgrade project for our existing Astaro installation with a budget of ~22.000 €.
    I'm affraid that I have to suggest our management to pause the project as I cannot believe, that things will become better and more secure for our investment with Sophos. What about all the security stuff Sophos already owns? We've choosen Astaro after a long evaluation for their mail encryption and web security (which we already use for several years) and for their good price. Sophos has it's own expensive mail encryption solution which we don't want! I cannot believe, that Sophos will accept Astaros innovative and easy to use solutions beside their own...

    It woud have been so nice to have several internet related security solutions in one product made in Germany, without hidden US spec op's backdoors and US-style similarity.

    You went from a decent statement to nonsense with the above tag line.  Sophos is a UK Company not a US one. If you TRULY believe sophos or anything else has backdoors then roll your own....otherwise put your extreme paranoia aside and pick the best out there...right now that is still astaro.  Until things change Astaro is still the best.

    Hmm, I guess I was too subtle last time.

    The free home use version is not going away.

    Do not ask if it will continue unchanged for a decade, I can no more answer that question than I could before the acquisition was announced.  Things change, but with the home use version, the only changes on the horizon are the addition of many enhancements and additional features in the pipeline.

    Also, as I said in my last post- the GIANT corporation we're talking about will have fewer than 1800 employees after the deal is complete, 220 of us coming from Astaro.  It isn't like we will be assimilated into some enormous Red or Yellow Borg.

    As I asked last time- at least give us a chance to prove it.  If you are already here, that doesn't seem like an unreasonable request.

    Jack, I don't think most of us are concerned about the free home version. Atleast not the long time users that see the value of astaro software and the team behind it. Most of us saw astaro at work or in a similar setting and run it at home because we liked it first, being free was just icing on the cake. There are a lot of things free on the internet but nobody uses them. It was the feeling of belonging that a small company like astaro brought with it and that is what will be lost is the fear that I have.  

    This was a business deal, as everyone wants to make a living and there is nothing wrong with that. Therefore I don't think you or anyone from astaro need to defend any decisions about the merger. However, different companies have different philosophies and usually the one with the bigger stake decides on the long term goals after a merger. This is what everyone is distressed about and only time will tell the final destination of both companies blended into one.

    And finally, from the link that you posted in your blog, the securosis' blog author states:

    Keep in mind that Sophos did one other deal of this magnitude, Utimaco, a couple years back, which turned into a train wreck. The real issue in the success of this deal isn’t markets or synergies – it’s integration. If they didn’t learn anything from the Utimaco situation this won’t end well.
