Third NIC?

Hey everyone,

I've been trying out different firewall software and had tried Astaro a while back and decided to come back to it.  This time around when I install it though I was wondering if there would be any advantage to having a third NIC?

I am using it for DHCP, DNS, content filtering, etc but I haven't tried many of it's other features.  For "standard" home use in a household with quite a bit of internet traffic (roughly 30+ IPs at any given time between devices and friends) can I utilize the third NIC for a teaming option or something for redundancy?

My primary internet connection will be coming in through a 100mbps connection and the other two NICs are both gigabit.

    The usefullness of the third NIC really depends on what you want to use it for.

    For redundancy or teaming of a specific interface there's really much point in a home setup unless you had multiple ISP's, say a DSL line to backup the 100Mbps main line.

    Where a third NIC does come in handy is where you want to create a second internal network that is both physically & logically isolated. At work I use the second isolated network as a DMZ (wikipedia) for certain servers I consider to be "high profile" (easily found) and "high risk" (commonly targeted).

    At home, and two other offices, I use the "DMZ" as a way of isolating Guest WiFi from the rest of our network. We offer guest access in a few places and creating a seperate network that never sees the inside of our operations improves the overall security.

    Thanks for the input!  I didn't really figure there was a huge advantage to it, but I thought I'd ask to make sure I wasn't missing something beneficial.  The reason I was considering it is because I have a spare NIC and am getting ready to built a new box for Astaro and figured I'd do it from the ground up if it'd help.

    The main reason I would like to have it in place would be for redundancy on our local network going back into the Astaro box.  I thought having it teamed with the primary NIC might be helpful for dropped packets or in the event one of the NICs failed that way we wouldn't lose our connection.

    I work remotely from home time to time and we have a very internet heavy house so the redundancy would be nice.
