Blocking ADS Request

Hello,

I would like to see an "additional feature" to complete my Astaro Firewall.


From a business prospective:

One time feature of Ad Blockers (Hosted Locally) In packet Filters and another  version updated weekly in the https filters. Give us both options locally and non local.

I do believe from a small business prospective this feature is a requirement for those companies that do not wish to babysit outgoing websites. IE: Block all sites except: 100 approved sites...then block intrusive incoming ads.

That would be my holy grail. Obviously, some companies weigh the costs to restrict and filter access others just want basics.

    When I last tried Home version V7.3-8.0 they did not have a Ads filter in HTTP/s. Did something change? I created the missing one painfully in my home edition. However for my business, I do not have a need for the proxy filter for >> out going sites, since I have limited financial sites that I allow / visit anyway. Even in my home version I turned most off. Plus, each user cannot download/install anything without admin permissions anyway. Win 7 was my idea. In short the proxy is a regulator. I have both the 25 business NAT and home, however I'm looking for an energy star solution for my home. Using VZ shamefully at home but temporarily.

    Now, if the HTTP/s came with an ad filter I'm soooo there but only for the ad filter.

    On the flip side, with big businesses it's a must to have everything (including Https proxy) in one place. So I would concur with the Astaro fees hands down but not for a few people. I'm small with high aspiration [[:)]] I use to manage 100 people years ago. I can do it again. Never an employee always hunted for my food. So its likely I will upgrade my license.

    Thus, for now I do not "absolutely need/require" the HTTP proxy for small business, I do "absolutely need/require an ad blocker." This I can't live without (see ad muncher). 

    I've have created a substantial PF list in a DNS HOST (A Group) called Advertisers = DROP which works well at first position. I use reg x expressions however some will not resolve. This is painful work (Yahoo finance) Bloomberg/MSN /CNBC with all ads blocked one by one.  It does work and works well.

    This is substantial work but I have yet to find a simple Firewall solution. Yes there are many desktop solutions, but I want it in astaro. I may resort to screens scraper to create macros to enter redundant data TO http... I could but why? 

    The other options is to place another router (pasted blocks) in front of the astaro as pass through or bridge mode. There are many work around but it would be so much easier in one place. That's the astaro motto..In one place.

    This is a gaping hole which needs to be filled.  Both small and large business WILL benefit whereas one may be considered optional with a performance degradation however slight. 

    I don't know one person one the planet who love ads except Sergei and his garage buddy billionaire. Hopefully he won't go broke like McCaffee did with 100 million to zero. But once we can stop ads..."short goog!"

    Its going to eventually happen but who can take down the machine?

    Hi,
    you can't block ads specifically in packet filter, you have to block entire sites, because the ads come through on port 80 as does the rest of the website. Just about every website has ads of some sort or other. 

    For home use, you enable http/s and disable the web ads in the url filtering categories.ASG has been able to block ads in http/s for quite a while, before v8.*** was released. But you also need to block port 80 with a packet filer rule to ensure that everything goes through the proxy if using.

    How energy efficient are you looking for at home, my sig has a low power box and the unofficial hcl has some very low power boxes around 8-10watts.

    I tried the Astaro Demo and did not see this. Nor do I have this on version 8.X for business.

    I have been blocking ads using PF; it's a PITA but it 100% works. I can assure everyone that blocking advertisers IP(s) works. Ie: double click.net is one IP and Ads.doubleclick.net is another. Unfortunately specific ranges of IPS  from and TO or DNS hosts are required. (see beethink.com for bad ips)

    As far as a home solution anything that uses nil electricity is best. My electric bills are very high as my kids leave all the CFL lights on regardless if sun shines or not. parents just don't understand they say.. is that a song?
