Platform preferences for Virtual ASG servers

Hi all,

I am interested in hearing about your experiences with different virtualized platforms where you are running one or more ASG servers.    Is there a consensus on which is the best platform?  For example, is ESXi or VirtualBox better, and why?

I am thinking of deploying a beefy ESXi server to run multiple virtual ASGs that will each connect to multiple RED boxes.  I'm looking forward to hearing about your experiences.  Thanks!

    Well...
    My server at home is a DELL Poweredge R210 1U system running VMWare ESXi 4.x rigth from an USB stick (internal usb is great). 
    One of the Virtuals is the Astaro virtual ASG. And I can say it runs perfectly. 

    The only thing what is a bit nervewrecking is the first connection to the webwadmin. The manual that comes with the Appliance is not accurate. 

    The reasons why to use VMWare?
    It runs as a standalone with very low cpu and mem consuming. ESXi is very good in handling these recources. 
    On a Virtualbox, you still run a Windows host which allready eats away all memory and cpu-time.

    But this is all my point of view.

    Hi,

    I just recently install the ASG v8 Home in a VMware ESXi 4.x that I use at home. But, I can't get into the webadmin. Could you please help me how to do it?

    First : Do not use the method mentioned in de PDF comming with the VM-applicance. 
    I figuered out that my laptop with vNet8 didn't want to connect with the webadmin. (reason unknown)

    What I did was:
    - In the VMware Console make sure that Network nic1 is powered on at startup and connected! 
    This buggered me the first time. All three nics are powered off at start! 

    - when set the nic1 to powered ON beter reboot the appliance for making sure you'll get an IPaddress for the nic1 (webadminconsole) 

    - check in de settings of the nic1 what IPAddress the nic1 recieved from the rest of the network / DHCP. 
    This is possibly NOT the same as in the pdf mentioned. 

    - On the system form which you're using the VMWare-client go to your PC Networkconfiguration and add the your EthernetAdapter an IPaddress within the same range as the nic1 of the Astaro Appliance! (If Nic1 is 192.168.25.1 add the address 192.168.25.2 e.g.)

    - After this try to connect with InternetExplorer to the http(/s)://192.168.x.y:4444 (where x and y are in the example 25.1) 
    When you are getting a webpage mentioning that there is a certificate-error hit Yes to go further into the webpage.

    When you are in the Webadmin, login and make yourself comforable by changing the IPadress of the nic1 to an address whitin the normal IPRange of your network. But that is what I did.
    This is the way I got connected to the Astaro WebAdmin. 
    I know it is a pain in the ass when you try to use the pdf as reference.
    The pdf is not accurate and not up-to-date to the new version.
