ASG 8 : Seems to need more Ram

Hi All,

I have a HP Proliant ML110 02 x 512MB, 02 x 1GB, Total 3GB RAM.
I did not get 4GB because I was told the Software version is limited to 3GB and did not want to waste the exisitng 512MB.

During the 7.505, my RAM Usage is 25% - 29%.

With the Version 8.0 ( I installed 64 bit kernel when it let me choose),

I loaded my 7.505 Backup and it uses 30 - 35%.

This increase in RAM ( while I still have a lot extra) is because Version 8.0 needs so much OR because now it is capable of loading more components to RAM since I have so much and should perform better?

The reason I ask is

1)  I do not see any obvious performance increase no matter due to 64bit or because it load more RAM.

2) Originally I recall reading that V8 should need Much lesser resources thus people with those Appliance should have better performance.

3) But looking at my numbers, does not seem that way.

Lastly, with this new 64bit concept, does that mean NEW Appliance Hardware will be coming soon that support 64bit?

    Actually those Appliance are just normal server computers right?

    So why is a 220 which seems High End to me is only 1GB?

    My Ram utilization is now 1.2GB if I calculated correctly.

    Another thing I realized is during the 7.505, if I remove the IPS rules under Server, which will drop the number of rules from over 8 Thousand to around 6 Thousand and RAM will drop significantly as in at least you see it moves.

    But in Version 8.0, it remains the same.

    Hmm, the 220 is a great workhorse, but it isn't really "high-end", there are several larger models.  Also, keep in mind that the speed of the RAM is significant.

    The Astaro appliances are "just servers", but are truly built for long life and high load.  

    There are three common large users of RAM: IPS, IM/P2P and Clam A/V.

    IPS should *always* be tuned to match your environment, reductions in the number of active attack patterns will have a two-fold benefit: reduction in RAM use, and reduction in likelihood and impact of false positives.

    The resource use of IM/P2P is not as sensitive to tuning, but it should obviously be tuned to your environment.

    If your system is swapping significantly, switching all relevant systems to single-scan anti-virus should reduce RAM (and CPU) use noticeably.
