ASG 8 : Seems to need more Ram

Hi All,

I have a HP Proliant ML110 02 x 512MB, 02 x 1GB, Total 3GB RAM.
I did not get 4GB because I was told the Software version is limited to 3GB and did not want to waste the exisitng 512MB.

During the 7.505, my RAM Usage is 25% - 29%.

With the Version 8.0 ( I installed 64 bit kernel when it let me choose),

I loaded my 7.505 Backup and it uses 30 - 35%.

This increase in RAM ( while I still have a lot extra) is because Version 8.0 needs so much OR because now it is capable of loading more components to RAM since I have so much and should perform better?

The reason I ask is

1)  I do not see any obvious performance increase no matter due to 64bit or because it load more RAM.

2) Originally I recall reading that V8 should need Much lesser resources thus people with those Appliance should have better performance.

3) But looking at my numbers, does not seem that way.

Lastly, with this new 64bit concept, does that mean NEW Appliance Hardware will be coming soon that support 64bit?

    My ram usage is the same approx within a couple of percent as v7.5xx. During the beta it went up but now is back around 28% of a 4gb 64 bit system.


    I am really worry about ram usage... you have 4gb and you say that ram usage is more or less the same... I have 1gb (220) and 75-85% in v7.5! [:(] I don't imagine after the upgrade to v8

    Hi Guys,
    I think you will find the 1gb will cause you to go into swap, but that depends on what facilities you are using.

    My v8 is configured the same as the v7.
    SPMTP proxy (outgoing)
    PO3 proxy
    http/s proxy with time managed profiles
    socks 4 proxy
    IDS
    VoIP security
    IM/P2P management
    FTP proxy
    extensive logging
    PF somewhere over 20 rules, some time managed
    VPN enabled
    reporting

    To cut down on ram usage reduce your logging.

    I really never worry about RAM use on ASGs (and most other systems) unless the systems start using swap space regularly.  Even then, grabbing a little swap for a big reporting job is usually no problem.  You will generally see RAM use of over 80% leading to swap use, but 60-70+% RAM use is normal for many ASGs.

    V8 does seem to reserve more RAM, but I have it running on a variety of systems- including grossly underpowered hardware (P3/512mb) and it is more responsive than when it was running a comparable V7 install.
