Read-Only Filesystem

Hi,

I've already opened a support ticket but wanted to also ask for advice here.

We have an ASG320 and it just stopped giving out IP Addresses, trying to browse the internet gives the Error Message: Read-only file system.

I can't access the WebAdmin, it says "503 Service Unavailable
Service Temporarily Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."

What should I do?  Reboot it?
* Edit: Just hooked up a monitor, looks normal except for the last line which reads, "journal commit I/O error"

    Sounds like the HD may be going out in it.  It must be replaced with a HD (or as they normally handle it, the entire appliance is replaced) from Astaro, a drive you pull off the shelf won't work.  Astaro Support will get you fixed up.

    Brian, it is normal for linux file systems to go read only if there is corruption on the partition and read/write errors. As you have already opened a case with support I would not try and fix this yourself but the solution may involve either fixing the filesystem (fsck), re-installing the ASG software (you do have a recent config backup don't you ?) or more likely a hard disk replacement and then a re-install.

    Hope it gets fixed soon.

    I've also contacted my reseller and he's working on this too.

    I have all the configuration backups that get E-mailled to me on a weekly basis, I don't have anything more than that though.  A few written documents on the packet filter rules, but no print-out (which would be handy with 100+ rules)

    I have a feeling that if I reboot, that it won't boot up, and right now my IPSec tunnels are all up so I'm going to leave it alone.  Man, do people complain when they can't browse the web at lunch.

    I just decommissioned an HP ProLiant DL360 G4 yesterday, would that be a suitable platform to deploy an ASG Software Appliance temporarily?  It only has the two on-board NICs, but I have a free NC7770 (Dual port Gig-E NIC) that I could install.

    Yes, a DL360 should be fine if it comes to that, but between Astaro and your reseller, they should just be able to get you a replacement 320 if necessary.

    The right solution is to wait for Astaro to respond, and to get the 320 back up to spec.  An ASG320 has eight Ethernet ports.  Unless you're only using eth0, 1, 2 & 3, you'll need more than four ports in a replacement box.  For example, it you're using eth7, you'll need another Astaro or something with eight ports or the configuration won't restore.

    I eventually power cycled the ASG320 and it did come back up.  I saw a few errors about journals but it looks to be running ok.

    Astaro said to hook up a USB CD-ROM and boot the installation CD (written out from an ISO downloaded from Astaro) and then restore the configuration backup.  I think I'm going to buy that Astaro Smart Installer, it looks like it's a USB CD-ROM emulator.

    I setup a trial software appliance on the DL360 while I do the reinstall with the CD-ROM.

    Brian, just a reminder that this is a configuration backup, not an image backup.  Data files like logs and reports are not saved.

    If you're running Mail Security, you might want to force delivery (release) of any emails that might be ham instead of spam.  I'm seeing very few false positives in our customer base, so that may not be worth the effort.

    If you have any data-retention requirements you might want to copy off some log files.
