Consumer ASG, RED, Wireless?

The licensing model has changed, so there shouldn't be an issue with buying an Appliance.  The only downside of using an Astaro Appliance is that you have to delete all of the partitions on the disk, then do an installation with the software version.  Some people have found a way to make the LCD work after that.

The good news is that V8 runs on a new kernal that supports a lot more devices, so you might not need to insist on an Astaro.

The reason I am keen on a Astaro Appliance is because

1) It guarantee my money on the hardware itself will work.
2) I can learn specific information about the hardware itself such as how to reset, how to reload firmware etc which are things we need to know if we deploy at work.
3) It is tiny thus more portable to bring around and can do things such as Site to Site VPN
4) Can play with HA / Load Balancing etc.

I do understand that some people managed to buy some of those "Tiny PC Appliance" from the Internet and managed to get it to work.
These parts is not common easily available in "IT Malls" here in Singapore.
To get it imported with shipment cost a lot more and sometime a lot of explaining to do at the customs.

Further more, now all the new cool stuff such as RED will only work with appliance. The upcoming wireless seems to work with Appliance too.

Thus I was thinking of simply buying it all from Astaro but never expected it to be such a damm pain to buy from them in Singapore.

It is just amazing...maybe I should just go back to CISCO, they used to be a pain but now a days they are very aggressive with SMB market thus even Consumers they are willing to sell with so many vendors selling their product.

Astaro in Singapore....it is hard to even find another seller.

The biggest problem is not hardware support etc, it is those sellers, they do not bother to reply when they see I do not have a business registration.

Buying HP Servers is often a "bet" as when ask more in depth details as to exactly which Chip it is on the NIC as I need to make sure it works with Astaro, they all scratch their head like what is Astaro?

Even if ask Chip, they would just say "Broadcom" and not the exact model.

I am just Lucky my current Server and the add on PCI Cards happen to work.

But buying another big server is not what I want as it is Noisy, Traps Dust and not Portable.

The RED devices are NOT appliance only. They will work quite nicely with a software install on other hardware. The same will probably be true of the Wireless Thingy, but details are not available yet.

For home use, software install on your own hardware has a couple of advantages: 1) Cost. The appliances are not cheap by any means.
2) They are limited in terms of upgradability and parts. For RAM, you need to buy the upgrade kits from a reseller and you will be limited as to what they will sell you based on the model. For example, with a 220 you will only be allowed 1GB RAM.
 
Check out the thread at https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/52/t/27167 and peoples signatures to find known working hardware. Using a Jetway mobo as the base, you can put together a tiny mini-itx Astaro system that is quiet and uses very little power.

- So assuming I continue to use my HP Server with Astaro Home Edition.

- How can I use RED ? Must buy the RED from Astaro OR the RED Software can be installed into some kind of "mini computer" such as those "Mac Mimi" whereby we can just buy that piece of thing out of a retail shop, install Astaro RED into it and that is it?

- Very hard to find specific motherboards etc in singapore, those IT Malls here simply carry popular products.

- Even if you tell them you want a NIC of a specific make and model due to compatibility issues, it is just a real pain.

- I know because buying my current HP Server 4 years ago was such a pain to confirm if it works since nobody knows and end up I took a bet and I sure is lucky it all works.

as far as I know, you can't buy any hardware and install "RED Software". You have to contact an ASTARO reseller and buy an RED-Box.

As far as the RED goes, there are two parts.  The configuration software is already built into Astaro.  Look in WebAdmin and you'll see a section called RED (V7.504+, but configuration is better in the new V8).  The hardware portion is the RED device itself which you have to buy through a reseller.  It is not available as separate software to install on your own hardware.  Take the time to look at the RED documentation at www.astaro.com/kb to understand exactly what it is, what it does, and the limitations.

i will say that we have now a new, and very active Astaro office and team in singapore. You should give them a call and get them to direct you to the best partner in the area to deal with that could easily get you appliances, devices, and support help.
