Adding LAN

I have recently installed the software ASG, and all is well. All the pc's in the house have 2 NIC installed. 1 card is internet facing (192.168.2.***), and the other solely internal (192.168.1.***), which is used for streaming music and video throughout the house from a pair of NAS drives, both networks there own switch . How do I go about adding the internal LAN through the ASG. Windows doesn't like the idea of specifying 2 gateways. I have 3 NIC installed on the ASG, with another possible through the onboard NIC. Maybe its obvious and I am missing something!

    Hi,
    welcome to the forum.

    For your setup you only need one network with one set of IP addresses. The steaming traffic is local and will be handled by the switch. The internet traffic will be handled by the switch passing it through to the ASG. This way there is only one gateway, throughput and protection are maintained.

    Hi there

    Thanks for the reply, is it possible to do it, whilst using two separate lans? When I previously had all this on the same lan, there was delay and stutter at times. Now that I have separated it to internet and internal lan, this problem has disappeared.

    Hi,
    there are couple things to consider.
    1/. the throughput of the switch
    2/. the speed of your LAN.
    3/. how many PCs do you have connected
    4/. check all the NIC (LAN cards) are auto negotiate if the switch can handle this.

    The minimum LAN speed should be 100mb/s anything less and you will suffer dropped packets for the streaming component.

    Hi again, thanks for the quick reply.

    1. Both switches are Gigabit.

    2. All the NIC's on the internal are gigabit as are the NAS drives and the homeserver, on the internet lan there is a mixture of gigabit and 100 Mbps NIC's.

    3. There is 5 PC's and laptops in the house.

    4. I will get back to you about the auto negotiate question. I am away at the moment.

    Answer to point 4, all NIC's are set to auto negotiate. I hope there is a solution, as at the moment all internet traffic is being routed through the ASG, but all the media files are still not going through the ASG. So it's sort of defeating the purpose.

    So the internal streaming network is isolated - not connected to the Astaro?
    Trying to figure out what you mean when you say "all the media files are still not going through the ASG. So it's sort of defeating the purpose."

    Basically I can't route the Internal LAN through the ASG at the moment, as Windows requires a gateway address, and it does not like specifying 2 gateways, so at the moment all the Internet connected cards are pointing to 192.168.2.100 the ASG gateway, and all the internal NIC's (which have all the media files) are on a 192.168.1.***, which has it's own separate switch, and is not connected to the ASG.  Is it possible to point the internal (media) LAN to 192.168.2.100 but have all the streaming sent out out on 192.168.1.*** switch? Which has all the media NIC's connected to it along with the NAS drives and the homeserver.

    Well, not sure I am fully understanding here, but I will try.

    So you have two separate networks serviced by two switches.  The "internal" network is the 192.168.2.0 and that services your internet as the interface on the Astaro is 192.168.2.100.  

    The "streaming" network is 192.168.1.0 and has your home server and other media devices on it.

    The "streaming" network does not have access to the net because it cannot get a route to the Astaro.

    The PCs should be OK as they see everything on both networks, correct?

    Well, if all you want to do is get the 192.168.1.0 network access to the Astaro and hence the internet all you have to do is connect the 192.168.1.0 switch to the 192.168.2.0 network and add an additional address on your internal network interface, i.e. add addr 192.168.1.100 onto the Astaro's internal interface.

    To route traffic between the two networks you will need to create packet filter rules just as you would have to create a NAT entry for the new network.

    The PCs would no longer need two nics as the Astaro would act as the router to the other network.  If the primary network is designed correctly with quality switches and cables you should not see any throughput issues with your streaming media.

    To make things easier I just gave IP's to the NAS drives and WHS in the 192.168.2.*** range and everything seems to be working fine.

    Hi there

    I have been running the ASG for a while now, and whilst there is very little changes to the default setup, (only DNS and Country blocking options have been changed). I cannot connect to Second Life through the SecondLife viewer, I can access the website with no issues. If I disconnect the ASG and use a standard router I can gain access. Does anybody know of anything specific that would stop access in the default setup. If I disable the country blocking this makes no difference. The DNS are set to OpenDNS. I should say that it is the software version running in an old PC.
