Licensed home user?

The only functionality that is "blocked" is customization, something that Astaro probably did in order to prevent the free version of the fine product from being used commercially. 

Giving away all the functionality for free is difficult and there are countries where people don't care much about being "clean" legal-wise and hence use the Home version in commercial environments.

So, showing that the version used is not meant for other purposes than non-commercial usage to end users at any place where there is end user contact with the product seems logical to me.

Offering a (paid / donated) version that is significantly cheaper than a commercial 50 IP license without having any differentiator to the commercial 50 IP license (see e.g. https://www.astaroville.com/astaro/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_74&products_id=547&zenid=4bt25du8p6knmh7dgpl0bt25l0 for an idea about pricing) does not seem too logical to me.

I am happy to learn about other views to this, though.

I have used a lot of different firewalls for home use. Nothing comes close to Astaro!!! I was worried about loosing features with this update, but it is only cosmetic. It is something I do not use anyway.

Giving away the software free for home use is a win-win for everyone. Here is why:

1. The average user does not has the knowledge or skill to configure software like this. I will dare to say that most home users are at least networking aficionados. This translates in free marketing for Astaro.

2. Astaro gets feedback from home users that results in bug fixes and new features for future products.

The customization feature is something that home users do not need. It will only benefit  a business using the home version in direct violation of the license agreement.

Astaro is trying to figure out a middle ground for home users. Back in v6.xx days, it was 10 users with 32000 connection limit. People started using routers to bypass user limit. So v7 introduced the 10 user limit with a stricter connection limit (1000??).  Many people complained about the user limit so it was relaxed after v7.5 to 50Ips and I think they relaxed it a little too much for the free loaders to trick the system. Now they are changing the customizations, which makes sense with the upcoming v8 to protect all the time/money/effort that goes into R&D to produce a product like this.

Well I certainly wouldn't be offended by a "donate" button which home users could choose to use if they wanted, even if the customization isn't there.  As I said earlier, I like the out of the box stuff and think they deserve the credit.  It's a great product and I have found none better.  Call me crazy, but I wouldn't mind donating something...

Thanks for the thoughts about  donating, but we feel we get excellent value from you in return for giving it away free for home use in the form of Word of Mouth marketing, your excellent feedback on our developmental versions and products, and the hope that when it comes time to buy a product for work, our solution is the choice.

It wasn't so much about finding a middle ground, as it was about finding the most non-invasive or cumbersome way to try and gain a bit of assurance about proper use of the home user version. Our thinking was that true home users wouldn't be affected much by an Astaro-only block page for example. No further changes or restrictions are planned for the home user community, so don't worry, your features, functionality, and all the good things you come to expect from us will certainly continue.
