[SOLVED]Admin authentication set to "None" - can't get in!

I was trying to "open up" access to any website for my own computer. (I'm the Dad - this is being used at home.) I was looking at the definition of the Admin user (me), and saw a field for "Authentication", with an option of "None". I assumed that meant "Don't bother with authentication for this user." But what it really means is "Don't allow this user into the system anymore."

So now, I can't get into WebAdmin. Duh.

I do have a backup from not too long ago, if that helps.

Thanks for any help. The system is still functioning, but sooner or later, I'm going to need to get into the WebAdmin.

    Hi,

    If you have an unencrypted backup you can put it on a usb stick and restart the astaro with it plugged in and it will load the backup.

    You can also login via the command line to fix the issue.

    I put my backup (my_astaros_name_7.501_2009-11-09_16_07.abf - does that look right?) on a usb drive and rebooted the server. It wouldn't boot because the usb drive isn't a valid "system disk". So I removed it and rebooted, and it came up normally. Of course, I still can't get into the WebAdmin, because nothing has changed.

    So what is the exact process for restoring from that backup that's on a usb drive? And I'm totally unfamiliar with Linux - the server is sitting at the "login" prompt for Linux. I was told by the guy who helped me set this up that I shouldn't need to ever go past that prompt, so I've never done it.

    I'm thinking there's a difference between "rebooting the ASG" and "rebooting the whole computer". Is that right? If so, how can I reboot just the ASG from the Linux command line? (I see, near the end of all the on-screen stuff, that "Backup restore" was "skipped". I'm guessing I need to get the usb drive inserted some time after Linux boots, and sometime before ASG gets to the "Backup restore" point.)

    Hi, 
    Yes, you need to reboot the computer, and put the USB stick in the computer once it starts loading Astaro (and before it finishes).

    Not a USB drive, a USB stick; when the Astaro sees a USB CDROM, it assumes that it's supposed to reload the OS from a CD.

    This is a great tip thanks! Wish I had known this before I re-installed after accidentally disabling the management interface when meaning to take down a WAN interface.
