wanted : home Astaro

Hi Everybody,

At work, we are protected with an astaro. I'm very happy with it !

I want to install an Astaro at Home, with the free licence.

I know it's possible to re-use an desactivated one (serial number desactivated after an hardware upgrade). 

Does someone have a desactivated ASG110/120, for (almost) free ???

    Did you know you can install an Astaro home license on a regular computer (maybe you have access to an old computer somewhere)?  You don't need to have an Astaro branded box.

    Definitely preferable as the old Astaro device is limited to 512MB.

    You could also get yourself some low end thin client with HD and 1GB RAM, and install it on that, if you don't have an old computer, or if you want to limit the electricity cost.

    Indeed, the cost of electricity is important for me.

    The other important things are :

    - noise (ASG 110/120 is fanless) (It's mandatory at my wife's point of view [[:D]] )
    - size (ASG 110/120 is a very small box) (This one is mandatory too [[:D]] )
    - VPN (to connect with my office, about once a month)

    Speed/memory size is not an issue. I'll just use standard IP filtering and VPN (no e-mail/web/P2P/... filtering).

    Everything I need is enclosed into this small box.

    Hi,
    find some posts by BarryG and have a look at his signature.

    I have built a box, but it has a couple of fans uses about 40w. I have changed one fan to a quieter version.

    My current box while it has fans is very quiet. I make sure most of the PCs I build are low noise, because fan noise irritates me.

    If you were going to buy a fanless system again today would you buy the exact same gear?  If not, what do you recommend?  Looking to buy a small fanless system to replace my aging 2u p3 800mgz.

    Hi, until Intel comes out with some new Atom chips, or AMD comes out with their equivalent, I'd definitely go with this system again _for home use_.

    I don't think the power supplies with most of these Mini-ITX cases are reliable enough for enterprise use, but you could always buy some spare parts or setup a failover.
    OR
    SuperMicro makes some 1U rackmount Atom servers; they're cheap (and available through NewEgg etc). I assume they have decent power supplies, but I haven't actually seen one. They have the 945GC chipset though, so they'll use at least 40watts versus the 17watts my 945GSE system is using, but you can get an Atom 330 (dual-core).

    Intel has a 945GSE Atom board now, but it's on has a single, Realtek, NIC versus the dual Intel NICs on my MSI board, so I think the MSI is still a better deal. 
    Also, for some reason, at least one user here has had a lot of trouble with the Intel brand 945GC Atom boards whereas no one is having trouble with the MSI boards.
    Most boards other than the MSI are not fanless either.
