Astaro Home License

Why 10 user max?   I do understand in a way, you do  not want it used for business but 10 users is VERY limiting.

For example 4 people in my house, each with his own computer.  1 xbox 1 xbox 360 and 1 wii.   So that is 7 users already used up.  Now add the HTPC that is 8, I also have notebook so that is 9. Two Tivo's so that is another 2.  So already up to 11 Lic, and any friend that stops by with notebook, or friends PC I work on.. would use a connection.      If I read the documentation correctly everything that connects to internet uses a license, and astaro keeps that lic in use for a 7 days (I could be wrong on number of days).

I really like astaro, trying to decide which distro/firewall to use and if was not for this limitation I would select astaro. 

I admit I have more stuff then alot of people, but with dvr's.. blueray.. game consoles using internet now, I can see it becoming more of a issue for home use.

    Search here for some suggestions on how to set up your network so you can avoid the limitation.  For example, the Xboxes and the Tivos, as well as the occasional friend's PC could be behind a cheap router that does NAT - they all would appear as a single IP to the Astaro.

    I realize their would be ways around it easy enough, could even setup to astarao boxes.. but why add the complication? 

    This is just for my home use, and to learn astaro since seems like a nice solid application could use in my job in the future.

    Is the 7 day thing actually how it manages licenses.  What does it do when ip number 11 hooks up?  

    I'm not trying to abuse it...I'm just one of those people who likes to know how things work [;)]

    plus that could really screw up a lan party! lol.

    It will not allow any IPs after 11.

    My understanding it is not the IP being assigned.  But when a IP address access internet through astaro.    So DHCP server could assign 100 IP's technicaly and you would be fine.  If that was how it was setup I could just set static IP's and not worry about it.

    You can search here.  I think you'll find that an IP is counted if it accesses the Astaro for any reason.  One client with a Cisco VoIP phone system had to create an internal time server and reconfigure his phones so they wouldn't try to send requests out to public NTP servers on the Internet.
