running ASG as VM?

Hello,

I would like to ask few questions related to running ASG SW APPLIANCE as VM on VMWARE (on XENSERVER):

- what is prefered way of doing this in terms of network cards ? 
- is there anything related to security that is compromised with this approach when one network card from ASG is facing Internet ?
-  is there anyone running ASG on XENSERVER ?

    You got me confused [[:)]]

    As far as I know XEN is something different then VMWARE. Main advantage of XEN is the fact that, since the OS knows it's running virtual machines, you can use para-virtualisation, giving you direct access to resources if you want to.

    Basically, XEN doesn't run everything VMWARE does (or at least not as easy) , but if you got something running on XEN you'd likely get a much higher performance.

    I am currently running my home Astaro on a XEN system, with one NIC facing the internet. However, this NIC doesn't have any other virutal interfaces defined, so it is dedicated for ASG. 

    The internal card(s) are shared through XEN, and used by several guest OS'es. As far as my experience goes, it works great. My Astaro internal interface is shared with a SUSE machine for example, and everything runs as if they were two fysical adapters (so the SUSE machine is bound by the rules that I definied in Astaro concerning external access, but for internal traffic it is as if Astaro isn't there)

    I know some of my customers are using ASG with WMWARE ESX, and although I don't know their setup, they tell me it works great as well.

    So I'd say that Astaro can work with both VMware and XEN, provided that you'd do your setup right (you wouldn't want to assign an external IP address to both your Astaro and your host for example [[:)]] )

    I'm running ASG with VMware ESXi as a trial, The server that it's running on has two cards, one for WAN and the other for internal. Just make two virtual networks and put the management of the ESX server on the internal card.

    I've been running ASG on ESXi 3.5 for just under a week at home.

    The ESXi server has two physical NIC's. 

    The first connected to the WAN.
    The second connected to the internal network.

    In ESXi I have defined one vSwitch (called WAN [:)] ) that I've assigned the external NIC to. There are no other devices attached to it (obviously).

    I have everything else assigned to the internal NIC. I'm running a couple of 2K8 servers and an MS Exchange 2K3 server under ESXi and various "real" laptops, and phones and a PC or two.

    So far everything is working very well [:D]

    When using ASG in VMware ESX, I have created two vSwitches...one with the physical internet-facing NIC and one with everything else.  I configured my ASG VM with two NICs...one connected to the internet vSwitch and the other one to the internal vSwitch.  The NIC in Astaro configured as the WAN/external interface is not pulling a DHCP address from the cable modem.  Is there something else I need to do?  If I look at the physical NICs in the ESX box, the internet-facing NIC is reporting the correct IP range.
