since astaro too complex

It's not complex as soon as you understand the basic. The manuals explain the fundamental but then you have to adjust it to your needs.

To me when I look at the GUI and want to do certain things I've no idea. I still need to look at the manual but doubt it has any step by step for me. 

My needs and wants are probably too crazy for any of you since everyone here is more advanced and more business like then me. So from all this I'm lost. 

I need something easy like a home user router is, but has security like in Astaro. I've never heard of anything and to do things I want to do either can't be done in Astaro/whatever or I just don't understand. And honestly, I don't want to be a burden to any of you even if any help you offer is by choice which of course it is.

I'm sad and confused and also anxious to find something because I just don't know what to do.

Lastly this is all I'd like to do and I'll from now on keep everything in this thread so I don't waste space and cause confusion with too many threads and stuff.

i need a utm, so would you guys please help me even if this won't be astaro etc?
i have wireless and wired. gaming is a must as i play xbox 360 and wii and ps3 all the time. wireless n is a must as that is what my macbook pro is.
i want av protection, content filtering to block categories like  etc, know how much we download and upload on a week/month type of basis and ips etc. i don't want any security for my gaming systems except to know how much download and upload they do on the wan.

wii is wireless g. macbook pro is wireless n and wired when i need fast transfers. xbox 360 will be wired most of the time and wireless g only sometimes. ps3 will be wired mostly and sometimes wireless g.

apple ipod touch will be wireless g as well.

currently all we have is a switch and linksys wrt160nl but that offers no security and no bandwidth up and down amount for wan.
I need something asap as we haven't had what we need for such a long time, Sad

Start by looking the sections one by one and configuring it by using the manual. I myself am a home user and I have to admin that both the manuals and the guys here helped me a lot.

You are wrong since there are so many home users on the forum I am more than sure all your questions will be answered provided:
1)You' have done your research (manual etc)
2)ask the correct questions providing as much relevant data as possible

Setting up astaro with the basic features (proxy content etc etc ) is really  easy(manual is a step by step process).To further tune it though means to start creating effective and correct packet filter rules. That bit needs work. However, it's still easy if you do the steps correctly. Set up an allow rule on the top with log...Every time you want to allow a specific connection check the log in real time and create the rule(on the log you should be able to chec kthe source /destination ip and ports). By doing that, after a while you will reach a point where you will be able to remove the allow any any connection [:)]

Don't be sad/confused. All of the guys in the forum are more than welcome to help.That doesn't mean though that they are going to dothe work for you. There are manual ,pdf and examples on google on how to configure most of the things astaro uses (packet filter are the same on every firewall)

Start by simple steps..Connect the appliance and set no rules and start "playing" with each feature.Av protection is easy to enable so is blocking content. Again I really need to stretch that all the info you require are on the manual and relevant threads on the forum.Don't try to deploy all the feature at once as this will probably fail.small steps each time and you will get there[;)]

Umm, I know the basics, but then to do anything advanced like messing with pf rules and allowing stuff and setting up my linksys as a wap, that's so far where I'm lost. 

I read the help page in the interface page where you get info on adding interfaces etc, but it doesn't give me any helpful info. I still need to look into the manual for that and hope it does better.

The other place it's good to look is in the Astaro KnowledgeBase" where there are indeed many documents with step-by-step recipes.

as a lot of the people on the forum are probably rightly suspecting, I too am but a regular Home user with some overtime after work [[;)]]

Don't let your hopes down, just follow the guides, the knowledge base, step by step, and you'll figure it out, as i did.

i need a utm, so would you guys please help me even if this won't be astaro etc? The astaro utm should be fine for you - or just use a old pc and teh home version - as you dont have many connections this may be best and cheapest

wii is wireless g. macbook pro is wireless n and wired when i need fast transfers. xbox 360 will be wired most of the time and wireless g only sometimes. ps3 will be wired mostly and sometimes wireless g.As long as you are the otherside of the wireless router the only slowdown should be the lineas long as you spec teh syestem correctly (ie more equipment better processor , more ram etc as each service will affect teh requirements)

Packet filtering rules etc can be complex but i would think for home use you should be able to setup basic rules that should nt be too big a problem.

I made a big post from my ipod touch earlier and it said the ticket timed out or something and wouldn't post. I'm bummed cus I don't wanna retype and I won't since I can't remember it all nor do I wanna do the whole thing, [:(]((( So I'll be brief.

The one thing I can thibnk of now for ease of use in the gui is static dhcp. You don't know what pc is based on mac id only. There should be named. Then a reserve button right next to it and you click it and yer done. That's a static ip now for dhcp. My dlink dgl-4300 when it was working did this perfect and was so easy. So that is one way to make the gui easier. There's others as well but I can't think of any. What would be fun for me to do is go through the gui and make notes of what could be different for ease of use etc and make a note of all this. I don't mind talking either. 

I haven't been around much cus I've been in extreme pain. Left side of my face has been swelled up and outside on my cheek and inside on the left side of my mouth is enourmous pain. When touching the bottom left teeth with my tounge gives me enoirmnous pain I don't do much. I've been 2 the ER 3 times and 2 different dentists plus my normal DR. My face and mouth hurt so much I just laid down all day and didn't talk and do anything really. I hurt a ton when I touch a certain tooth on bottom left in my mouth. My issue though isn't dental, but my new dentist says gum abses probably. Then my DR said TMJ or something and then joint something and then  nerve something on my face. So I've been on antibiotich and some other meds but haven't taken those due to face swelling. I'm just taking my own anti depressant, adhd med, bp med and this antibiotich for now. My face swelling is better and going down, but I still have pain. I'm supposed to ice my face like 30 min on, 30 min off, 30 min on each time i eat. So i haven't been around here much.

For Astaro, I have ideas to make it easier for me to use and features I wish it had too. Features and ease of use that if I could I'd pay for the firewall once it did this stuff.

Like you I started out the hard way. I even tried to install it as an application on a linux box. The Astaro folk soon put me on the straight and narrow.

If the weekend turns out as bad as the weather bureau is promising I will write you up a simple guide to getting the basic functions of the ASG working. The bits that allow your PCs to websurf, e-mail and game etc.

I have to admit i had a hell of a time (both good and bad!) configuring my Astaro, but now everything which has to work for normal usage is up & running.

Still running into some issues, so Angelo, i have to admit a lot of times the guide explains what each function does, but not how you have to apply it when you want something done.

Think of it as programming languages, before you had to say exactly what you need, and how it has to be done, in 4th gen languages you just say what you want done, and it gets it done (well, that's the theory at least [[;)]] )

Oh, and RFCat_vk, please don't start me on Cisco routers. I think they are the basic example of how you make something difficult, which normally should be easy... Try just configuring the ip-address in it.... Oh...My....God....

I think I know the basics because everything for the most part is done via just installing it and then the first time you log into the UI it's straight forward to me for making the basic stuff needed to get going. 

Where I run into issues is as the above poster said on how the help says what something is for, but not how you'd use it or any steps to get it running kind of thing.

My network owrks now as I just had to connect the linksys router to the ASG LAN port lol. However I'm not sure if this is how I want it, but it works ok for now. 

I did write Angelo a good sized message via pm on a few ways to make it easier to use and some feature ideas kind of thing. One thing I run into is I can have a difficult time understanding anything unless it is given to me in step by step instructions. 

I bought from cdnow.com a Cisco wireless 8 series router thinking it had AV protection, it didn't. I hated the software to config it. It had no web based gui config like Astaro etc and was a major pain in the booty. Cisco bites for their UI.

Oh yes, you are truely right... I'm studying for the CCNA exams at the moment and the whole thing is unnecessarily complicated, and this in a rather extreme way...

I think the Astaro Webadmin is very handy on the whole. I would call it one of its most advantageous features.
