Request for Kernel Source 2.6.16.62-111

Would the software kernel not need different hardware support overall?  Maybe extra driver support that isn't used on the ASG appliance where the specific drivers for the hardware are all known as both the ISO installs are different sizes overall?

On an ASG 320 appliance I have the .111 

Despite Astaro policy of releasing source code for major versions it's a violation of the GPL.  If they are distributing the code, they need to provide the source code when requested.

So, without trying to sound too harsh...come on Astaro...please post this kernel version.

I don't think tmbm50 is being unreasonable or rude, and his intrepretation of the GPL is correct.
Since Astaro distributes software freely on the internet, they need to freely provide the (current) source upon request, without having to go through a reseller.

Although I agree with you barry, but from Gert's answer and looking at the GPL folder on ftp.astaro.com it looks like they only release the kernel/sources with every major release and then tweak/fix without the source code being available for minor versions. I browsed through the /lib/modules folder on my astaro firewall, but ofcourse they wouldn't put kernel sources on a production firewall[:P]

On the other hand, I feel bob's frustration also. People have answered to the best of their abilities about the availability of source code. If tmbm50 found the time to search for this board, I am sure he could have found the contact information on astaro website Astaro Internet Security - Contact Form 
So it could be interpreted in any way tmbm50 sees fit but the next gpl release of source code would come with the release of astaro 7.5

Should you feel it necessary to ban me and my ISP, that is your call.  I'm not starting a flame here and this will be my last post on the subject, but if you consider the phrase "come on Astaro...please post this kernel version" to be harsh, well I'm not sure what to tell you.  Seems like a straight forward but polite statement too me.  

I have been around this forum long enough to know that it heavily frequented by Astaro personal.  So yes, this is a user forum, but we all know Astaro hangs around here. And as you will see in the original thread, I was hoping for community support on what is a "community" issue. 

I have contacted the reseller and sent numerous inquires through the Astaro contact us page.  No one answers.  So I post it in the forums knowing that Astaro at least can not deny seeing the request. 

Astaro IS violating the GPL by not making the source of currently shipping device available.  I guess the community and the company or ok with letting that quietly go unnoticed.

I have the feeling Astaro only release it for major versions, since it IS heavily modified and separating out their custom code is probably painful.

I've been told in the past that the GPL portion of the code is almost useless without the bits Astaro have written though.

Thanks for your response, tmbm50.  I probably over-reacted to what I perceived as one unhappy business partner calling out another in this forum; I thought, "there are proper channels for that, and it's not our problem!"

I googled yesterday and found a site where you can lodge a formal complaint against Astaro for their GPL policy.  I could not find a formal list of "GPL Officers" for the organizations that use GPL code.  Like most people here, I know of GPL, but have no interest in the details nor in using the source code, so I admit to ignorance of these things.

For those who support Astaro's continued use and support of GPL, it appears that a confrontational approach could well stimulate Astaro to chose another license provider.

Oh boy, you dug out the old can of worms[;)] I am by no means any kind of licensing expert but don't believe for a second that businesses are not protecting their IP rights. The code that astaro can protect is already protected. Linux is released under GPL, you can't just recompile it and say now its proprietary. Same goes for other GPL products that are integral part of astaro. I think astaro has had a pretty good history of providing source code for their stable releases. Lets just leave it at that[:)]

In case you didn't know, if you use GPL'ed sources, modify them and redistribute them (in binary form), you have to make the sources available also.

Not doing so invites legal action, and no, I'm not joking, most router manufacturers who didn't already got sued at least once.
